See How Thumbnail Sketches Begin from Nothing

Note: this is not a pro gig! This is a personal project. One relationship I’ve never had before is working with an Art Director. That relationship seems so opaque online, so I thought it would be fun for us to take away that wall and show you what it’s actually like.

If I’m going to do freelance Illustration, I need to learn the nuts and bolts of what that relationship is like. Lucky for me, I know a seasoned Creative Director Ashley Browning. I am doing a “rehearsal” illustration with her!

This is the first round of thumbnails that I did. I sent them to her with this message, and I’ll share in the next real what she wrote back.

“Before I send you “real thumbnails” can you tell me if thumbnails that look like this would be acceptable? In terms of format and how sketchy they are. Should I include color or just do black and white? I numbered each sketch too. You can see them here

For mood board images, I dropped a whole bunch here, wasn’t sure if you wanted something that looked more like a mosaic of images. This folder has everything in it. Lmk if there is a better format for sending images too.”

Clara Lieu was an Adjunct Professor at the Rhode Island School of Design from 2007-2020. Her artwork has been exhibited at the International Print Center NY, the Currier Museum, Childs Gallery, the Davis Museum, and more.
