Australia to bring in new laws with the new year

The start of the new year brings with it a raft of changes that will impact millions of Australians โ€“ from welfare boosts to tough new vaping laws.

From January 1 onwards, the government will enact the next step in its strict new vaping regime.

This will include an import ban on disposable and single-use vapes containing nicotine.

For about a million Australians receiving welfare payments such as youth allowance or carer allowance โ€“ their payments will be boosted by 6 per cent, in line with inflation.

The NSW Minns government has implemented a $60 cap on road tolls in the state with private drivers being able to apply for a rebate of up to $340 per week.

In Queensland, kindergarten is now free for all children aged four and a half and up.

Across the country, pensioners who still want to work will be able keep more of their pension as the work bonus limit is permanently increased from $7,800 to $11,800.

  1. I can understand the ban on disposable vapes but why the hell would any government ban vaping?? Even NZ quickly scrapped its tough tobacco laws (not for health reasons though!).

  3. I hear DSP recipients are still only alloud to earn $160 per fortnight (additional) before they take 50 cents in every dollar above that. Not even fucking millionaire pay that much for every dollar they earn above a certain amounts. Ridiculous. Still $160 I believe. That is a sick joke. Would not even cover the groceries.

  6. on the part of vapes, good. These things all contain a battery, a number of them lithium, and they're just being thrown out to the elements. The vapes already thrown out WILL cause fires, it's only a matter of when. Also as a pub worker who works around a smokers area I'll tell you right now that people who vape are significantly less considerate about where they blow their clouds than smokers ever have been so I would welcome a reduction in that.

  8. Notice how like taxes governments just love to add to the list of new ones but hate to reduce it. Any government that would pledge and carry out that pledge to reduce both is a vote winner so why don't they do it?

  9. Kerry Packer was 100% correct – all politicians do is introduce more and more laws and regulations and each time they do they remove some of our freedom – these people are control freaks. Government is never the solution and is always the problem.
