Excellent- current issue – 1) brand new battery will hardly spin starter unless jumped from truck battery . 2) mower sputtered out and won’t restart(no spark on plug). Edit = a new spark plug and it seems to be all-good
Best YouTube video!!
HELP Please… I have a 15.5 Techumse engine with all the wiring cut off and left hanging… I figured it should start with my booster pack… pos to the starter, and neg to the frame… But theres No Spark from the coil… It worked fine before the engine was removed and the wiring harness cut off… But it still should start…!?? I even took coil/magneto off and cleaned all surfaces and put bk on… gapped corectly yes… and removed ground wire also and still nothing… Only wires left are the coil wire hanging cut at end… a yellow & black wire coming from inside the engine it looks like, and thats it… But shouldn't there be spark from that coil.? Even tried a diff plug… I figured it would start, and i'd just have to pull the plug wire to shut it down…? Any1 know.?
Great explanation. Thanks a million.
I have a question on the ON/OFF switch but first of all I have to say that this is a great video. Obviously, I can check the ON/OFF switch with an ohmmeter. I have a Champion engine (Honda Knock-Off) and I want to know the following: if the switch is in the OFF position, the switch has pass and if the switch is in the ON position, the switch has no pass (is insulated). Is this correct? Thanks for your help!
Hi buddy great videos I have a question if I take my rider motor off to work on it can I start it with it bolted to the bench
On my parkside 1200 b inverter generator l have no spark. l have a ignition coil assembly (with the spark plug lead) on the rotor and a current amplifier (see photos) mounted on the pull start casing which look like it should be on the rotor given its radial shape. Cannot find a schematic anywhere. Am l missing something?
Can l post photos?
I'm a new subscriber because of this video, I want you to know it helped me out a great deal, and I'll be looking forward to watching you other videos. 👍
What can cause a dead short in coil that sometimes fires? I checked for continuity between post that you disconnected and ground and there was continuity. I checked with the shut off wire unhooked. There should have been no continuity.
I got a br 65 stihl hand held from a coworker that was sitting in my closet no fuel for a couple years. It needed a new primer bulb that I replaced and checked the fuel filter, air filter and plug all brand new. I put fuel in it but couldn't get it to start so I checked for spark and it wasn't making spark the gap on the coil looked way off so I gaped it but still no spark. I felt a slight Zap from the wire going to the boot but don't see any damage in the insulation. Thinking about replacing the ignition coil the fly wheel looks fine and magnets are good. Hoping that's what the problem is.
Is there a way to tell if an ignition coil is weak or not sparking every time. I have run into a couple like this where I would get spark but it seemed like it didn’t spark every piston stroke.
My generator don’t have spark! I replace spark plug, ignition coil and did everything you did and still don’t have a spark! I don’t know what else I can do? My coil is new but I can’t adjust it has holes that I can’t get it closer to the magnets it’s kind a far! It’s aftermarket.
Thx first time working on small engines I didn't know about the Gap
Just ohm the coil. Then there is no doubt.
This was a huge help. I have a old 80s generator with a points system in trying to get going again and I replaced the coil with a new upgraded electrical one off a generator that DID run once upon a time and turns out that coil is now dead as well.. what are the odds but now I know. Huge help, another big thanks to you Don!
EXCELLENT VIDEO!!!
I have a Westinghouse IGen 2500 inverter generator, where is the coil located on these small generators? I am not getting a spark at the plug. Great video by the way.
Thanks for the great video donyboy73! I've watched so many others that leave you with more questions than answers. Yours are well thought out and concise. Yours and Tepco Cycle repair should be the standards for posting helpful tutorials on YouTube.
the spark on my atv was weak. Thought it was the coil . I bought a new coil on Amazon. Got someone to fix her. Found out it was frayed wires Not the coil. He followed the wires manually and found 3 frayed wires. Problem solved
Hi, I was having trouble starting my Stihl cut off saw. It was intermittent, as in a very weak spark sometimes, then nothing. However, even when there was nothing, when earthing the plug on the engine, I would have no spark, but, would get a bite on my fingers when pulling it over. So I looked up your video and did the kill switch wire thing and there is definitely a coil problem. now I can purchase a new one and be confident it is the problem with not starting. ( Oh I had cleaned the flywheel magnets and the two pick up poles on the coil which were quite rusty and regapped the coil, when checking it in the first instance, hence eliminating a poor contact scenario). Thank You, for making a comprehensive and easy to understand video
Hi, if flywheel key is sheered, would you still have spark?
Obviously this does not apply to any small engine on something like a motorcycle that has a magneto unless all you want to test is the kill switch. In this case you have to also measure the output in ac from the mag or check the resistance through the mag coil. Then, if everything in the system is good but you still have no spark its most likely the electronic module.
I have kipor ig 770 wiht no spark , its was much gasoline i the crankcase , have signaltested the coil fore continuity its oki, and the sparkplug cable its oki, the sparkplug works too, its tested on my enginesaw
There iits a aruond 9 volt in the hardnes when i pull i the startline , the coil have only 2 wires , have tested the startswitch too
Thank you sir. My toolbox has increased exponentially due to videos like this!!
changed coil, still no spark, could the magnet on flywheel be weak?
Thanks for the great tip. I put a new coil in my friend's lawnmower, and after a few weaks it started dying again after a few minutes, it wouldn't start till it cooled down. Hopefully I remember this in the spring.
Thank you sir for a very good lesson n troubleshooting no spark preblems on small engines. I am impressed.
Yes, I am very impressed of all the information you’re giving us each video. I listen. I learned so much that I can’t stop looking at them. I’m new to your channel. I gotta say I should have listened to you a long time ago. Thanks for the great work you are a gentleman. From OTTW Ont.
Hi Dony, firts, thanks for all your great videos. But today I heard from my stihl dealer that I can never do this test: testing spark like you did in this video. He said I for shure kill "the module". My chainsaw is a stihl 034av. But he said it can cause problems with all Chainsaws. He told me I need to put a resistor in in between to no overload that module. Is that correct? I never heard this before either.
Thanks
Thank you for this video
Brilliant
Great stuff thanks
Is the gap just to be sure and not rub the flywheel?
THANKS
Outstanding! Thank you Sir!
Grate thanks for that
Thanks Donny. Can I test by taking the flywheel shroud off, disconnecting the primary tab, and moving the flywheel rapidly with my hand with the magnet on top, by the coil? That should create a spark right?
Thank you
Hi I have a 3200 psi pressure washer that doesn’t start when hot. Starts up when cold and then after cool down. I changed the carb with the same symptoms. What to do ??
A question?, I've bought a replacement ignition coil for my Stihl 009. The old one has a spade connector and a wire with a ring or loop connector, on a short wire that connected to one of the main coil retaining bolts. The new coil does not have the loop wire. Is the new coil a modification. It is the correct coil for the 009.
