The Break Down: Symphony of War: The Nephilim Saga

Symphony of War is a Strategy RPG in the mould of games like Fire Emblem and Ogre Battle. A really solid indie interpretation of the formula, it’s got plenty of tactics, equipment, optional challenges, story scenes, and a great class evolution system. It does exactly what a game in this genre needs, and it does it all well. Nicely detailed sprites as well. A great effort.

  1. Glad you're covering this one. It is a little gem for sure! I stopped playing as they're going to do a UI pass and reduce the overall interface clicks which I think is its current biggest weakpoint.

  4. Just finished this game recently in captain difficulty so here is my 2 cents about the game.

It's a fantastic SRPG game, i loved its unique mechanic, the squad system, it's really well done and it adds more complexity when it comes to army composition, if Fire Emblen had to copy a new mechanic, this would be it.

The game reminded me a lot of Fire Emblen Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn because of the linear gameplay, no sidequests (except 1 chapter which had 5 or 6) and nowhere to overgrind your units unless you get arena tokens which you get some each chapter just a way so you can keep your army evenly lvled up. Well you could just run 1 squad and let it destroy everything but that way you would not clear chapters faster so it's kinda pointless.

Loved how tricky the upgrade unit system works and i can give a few tips so you have the best squads.
    1. Read the in-game tutorial, I overlooked a lot of mechanics on my first run and i decided to restart after 10 chapters because i disliked my army.
    2. Each chapter buy everything on the market, specially the mats for unit upgrades.
    3. Careful with using mercenaries as followers, they will eat your capacity points and they are pretty expensive
    4. First, look the unit's affinity. Each affiniy has a bonus growth on certain stats. So if you planned to have a tanky unit like a Sentinel while that unit having a water affiniy, it might take way too long for that unit to get the required Strength to upgrade it since Water has – STR growths
    5. Just to sum the best units with each affiniy:
EARTH –> ++HP -SKL ; meh early game, fine lategame for melee heavy armored units since you will have enough STR for the upgrades.
WATER –> +HP -STR -SKL +MAG ; mages and healers
LIGHTING –> -HP + STR +SKL -LOY ; light armored units
DARK –> ++STR ++MAG –LOY –LDR ; Best affiniy for followers, Valkyries in particular. This one is more rare to find than the others.
LIGHT –> ++LOY ++LDR ; Best affinity for squad leaders, the higher the LDR the more units you can add.
    6. When it comes to searching for the right affinity, you save some money by save scumming. Since the market is random, you can roll units until you get the one you want.
    7. Other way to get money is to make enemies surrender as much as possible.
    8. I don't really know how it fully works but if you want to have a flying squad you need a dragon rider as your squad leader. For some reason though, i added 2 other dragon riders and all healers behind them and they squad could still fly ignoring terrain but if i added 2 grounded dragons the squad would not longer fly.
    9. You can't change main characters affinities but you can with anyone else, so have someone with the light affinity early game as a recruited squad leader and you can see how his ldr grows exponientally and change it once you have reached your desired amount.

The game is a 9/10 for me. I would totally recommend to any fan of th egenre.

  5. 30 chapters. Your review is well done and right on, I beat the game on Warlord difficulty first try, in roughly 40 hours.

I'm looking at speed running this game, my initial chapter timing indicates an any% run can be done in under 6 hours.
