  1. Hi Doctor what you make of this. I was stunned when I read it can you shed some light. .Bismarks gun crews did this? Notes Bernard Brodie, the dreadnought underwent an "extreme oscillation" in mood. Exaltation stoked by the encounter with Hood gave way to despair following a minor torpedo strike from a British warplane. Admiral Günther Lütjens, the senior officer on board, gathered Bismarck crewmen after the air attack and "implored them to meet death in a fashion becoming to good Nazis." A great coach Lütjens was not. The result? An "abysmally poor showing" in the final showdown with HMS Rodney, King George V, and their entourage. One turret crew fled their guns. Turret officers reportedly kept another on station only at gunpoint. Marksmanship and the guns' rate of fire — key determinants of victory in gunnery duels — suffered badly.

  2. Early Jet engines. Poor climb performance. Excellent altitude. Great power to weight. Bad fuel consumption.

Imagine a Bomber with mixed drive. Engines designed to work great at ground level, and extreme altitude, and Jets to climb to altitude, and switch back on when entering hostile airspace to literally overfly the hostile fighters due to mechanical limits.

Probably need major redesign to deal with the ultimate Stall corner at high altitude, but well done Germany has to work out how to build a jet engine interceptor to get up to the Avro Jetcaster who flies in formation well above any interceptor in the world, turning every 20 seconds to evade heavy AA.

And as air design and Jet technology is better developed, later swapping out Merlin powered fighters, for Jet fighters to intercept German bombers.

All while the Navy is building Flower Class Jet Corvettes.

  3. I didn't watch the video – yet

I'm just here to remind Dr. Clarke that there hasn't been a new episode of Bilge Pumps since October and that it would be amazing if the best naval podcast could keep going for another 120 episodes 🙂

  4. IIRC wasn't the turret on the L/J class actually a bit crap? The gun layout meant that all the crew were crammed together between the guns, and the hoist didn't rotate with the mounting, meaning that loading was slower and more exhausting. I'd rather have them work on a decent mount first.

  5. The question if additional funding was provided for jet engines and Gas Turbines in a peace time environment, which programs for RAF and Royal Navy would see their funding cut to provide the additional funds? If additional funding was provided by treasury which other departments would suffer a funding cut? In a peacefully environment of late 20's early 30's with the impact of the depression there would have been a limited capacity for treasury to increase funding defense.

Other consideration is the unit costs of Jet engines and Gas turbines against conventional piston engines and standard Boiler/ turbine system of the Royal Navy. Also costs of each aircraft for example the Spitfire against the Vampire.

Having been involve in managing a non-profit budget of 200m the challenge each year was how to fund new projects and still maintain existing programs. The usual outcome was reducing or stopping some of the exist programs to fund the new program.
