Mount Olympus – An extinct volcano on Mars, located in the province of Farsida (the region of the planet’s equator), where a number of other volcanoes are located, the highest mountain in the solar system in terms of both absolute and relative height.
The height of Olympus is 26 kilometres from the base, and its diameter is about 540 kilometres, from which it deservedly received the name Olympus.
The relatively large size of Olympus is explained by the fact that Mars probably has no tectonic plates, unlike Earth. Due to the lack of plate movement and the absence of erosion, the volcano can exist for a very long time.
Analyses of “Mars-Express” images showed that the freshest lava on the slopes of Olympus is supposedly about 2 million years old. Thus, it cannot be ruled out that the volcano may start erupting again.
