‘Bit of a mystery’: Australia won’t help the US after denying them a warship

The Australian’s Foreign Editor Greg Sheridan says it’s “a bit of a mystery” as to why Australia can’t do something to help the US after it was revealed our country plans to deny the US a warship.

“There’s still a bit of a mystery about why we can’t do something,” Mr Sheridan told Sky News host Caleb Bond.

“Our frigates are indeed pathetic, clapped out, old, geriatric pensioners who should be given an honourable retirement in an aged care home.

“Indeed if they sail all the way there, they may well need the RACV or the NRMA to help them on the way or something.

“But if they’re there as part of an American task force, they won’t be subject to any real danger.”

  1. One thing that is being missed is that commercial ships are being attacked and impeded from carrying on their business… that is the idea of sending warships to that region. It's not just about someone else's war. It is an attack on everyone.

Why China doesn't want us to defend the free sailing and trade on the open seas is a demand for capitulation, especially in the South China Sea.

  2. Well long term this is a good thing, less arms being used, less use of naval warfare, less people getting involved, and less war intensification. Just because AUKUS exists. Australia is still within their rights to deny or supply their allies with warships. I mean currently Australia is not waging any wars at this current stage, just a cultural one a political one from within and that's it.

  3. Why does australia need to involve itself in yet another war with people who are no threat to Australia?
Turkey was no threat to Australia, neither was Germany or italy. The North Koreans didn't want to hurt us, and neither did the north Vietnamese… at least they didn't until we became their enemies by turning up on their borders or lands trying to kill them. Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan… Not one of them was or is currently a threat to Australia. Someone please explain our strategic interests in Ukraine, supply and training equals involvement…. They don't believe the things they tell us…

  4. Hey agro, even the experts contradict your baseless claims and you throughout your show carry on like a fuckwit..maybe volunteer mate ,join the armed forces, love to see you at sea with the ships that you'd like to send, couldn't think anything more pleasurable than housing your vomit through the scuppers

  5. We are probably the most liked country on earth we dont need to make enemies. We have no reason to get involved in war. I want to stay safe in my country. I dont support fighting someone elses war and definitely need to spend our tax dollars on health welfare construction… Etc. Australian interests come first and thats how it should always be.

  6. Let me explain why USA requested a warship from Australia, not that USA needed help… USA is testing Australia after PM and his cabinet recent visit to China and Australia failed on this test. It is now clear that Australia's PM has made promises to XI of China… Promises against USA… And that is not good at all.. not good for USA and not good for Australia. If only Australia had agreed to send a little yacht, USA would have been happy… So it was not about the warship at all…

  7. Would not be one bit surprised if Airbus albo was leaned on by the greens and teals. That if he wanted their continued support to pass legislation. He had to say no to the US. How pathetic and spineless is Airbus albo? How long til the next election?

  10. I have walked along the beaches and across the ridges of Guadalcanal when there were still the bones of Japanese Soldiers on the ground. I have imagined the horrors of the war fought there to protect Australia from a Japanese invasion. Our saviors were young American boys many of whom died in the effort. Now a request from our No. 1 military partner who is letting us have Nuclear Submarines that they have not offered any one else, is refused by our left wing pussy footed government. Today for the first time in my 80 years, I am ashamed of Australia,

  11. A bit pessimistic about our frigates here! After looking into this I have to disagree with Mr Sheridan on this point. These ships are around 20 years old but have upgraded weapons and radar systems, an impressive top speed, are remarkably agile for their size and are quite battle-worthy……..Which begs the question: Why isn't one of them on it's way to the Red Sea?
