Defence Minister confirms Australia will not send warship to Red Sea

Defence Minister Richard Marles has confirmed Australia will not be sending a warship to guard shipping routes in the Red Sea but says the decision wasnโ€™t because of a vulnerability of the Navyโ€™s fleet to drone attacks.

Up to 16 ADF personnel, including six from Operation Prosperity Guardian will be sent to the Red Sea instead to help protect ships from Houthi rebels.

The Australian government has confirmed it is tripling its ADF personnel through this US-led operation to guard international waters in the Middle East.

The Defence Minister says the reason Australia will not be sending a warship is because the government wants to focus on its own trade routes which are mostly in the South China Sea.

The decision was welcomed by China, despite Mr Marles confirming the decision was not made in consultation with them.

  1. What a woeful state the ADF has become, they won't send a Ship because a) they have no missiles b) they couldn't defend themselves let alone anyone else and c) there is no money to send a ship any further than Newcastle.

  2. Imagine being in the ADF and the only deployment you ever get sent on is flood watch or bushfire recovery. There is NO incentive for anyone to join let alone stay in. No wonder there is an entire ANZAC ship with no crew. Who would join the RAN to go nowhere – the answer is no one, and that's exactly why people don't want to join the RAN. This is what happens when you have a government that is completely and totally out of touch with what the Australian people expect and would want.

  3. As an American, I somewhat disagree with this move, but I also understand it. First, US leadership has proven to be embarrassingly weak with this administration, so why would Australia trust us to make the right calls? Second, it is good to keep a strong country like Australia 100% focused on the South China Sea. This way, the US and our allies arenโ€™t being spread too thin.

  4. Big mistake. From what dad told me years ago the UK gave some assistance to Australia.
But when UK asked for something from Australia they said no.
We should help because one day we will need and we won't get it.
    China is NOT a friend.

  6. Generally, a Labour Government
    has NEVER been popular with
    The Armed Forces…… especially
    with High Command Officers.

    Generally, a Labour Government
    ALWAYS makes 'cuts' in
    The Military Budgets.

    ALWAYS, a false economy.

Surely, the number ONE duty of all
    democratically elected governments
    IS
    'To Protect its People."
