Remember that time Mickey Mouse beat up a kid from New Jersey? Or when they found hazardous waste at Epcot? Or when Disney World welcomed hundreds of sex trade workers from all over the United States? Probably not, but that’s why I made this video telling the story of Disney history from back in the 1980s. In this video I’ll explain all these stories and more as we take a deep dive into the seedy and hidden history of Walt Disney World.
When Disney World opened near Orlando, Florida back in 1971, it was guaranteed to be one of the top destinations in Central Florida. As Disney World became more popular, and as more people came to vacation in Florida, more and more crazy stuff started to happen at Walt Disney World.
From the time a couple from Texas was robbed on the Monorail, to the extinction of the Dusky Seaside Sparrow at the abandoned Discovery Island, there are so many stories that were reported in the Orlando Sentinel, the de facto newspaper of record for Disney World. I’m sourcing all the material in this video from them, through newspapers.com, and I’ve put together an interesting video that contains Disney World history and trivia that even the most die-hard parks fans don’t know.
These stories are almost as good as the smell of the water in Pirates of the Caribbean. They are as good as the smell of the oranges on Soarin. Some are as scary as the Haunted Mansion, others are as wild as Space Ranger Spin. Some have as many twists as the Barnstormer, and some are as fantastical as Peter Pan’s Flight.
