The torture and murder of prisoners of war is dishonorable, barbaric and illegal, I think the people learned that, because in the 1960's I spent some time in Japan, in Kagoshima Prefecture in Kyushu. Pacifist and kind people were what I mostly found.

The stereotypical dominance of Japanese xenophobia is still in force and is slowly destroying its economy and society from within with only a previous few outstanding individuals trying a modern humanistic life. A shining example is the internet's "Kimono Mom". She tries to slough off the unending criticism of her demographically dying fellow citizens. Japan is still at war and continues to lose from its own cultural cancers.

The Japanese resorted to suicide missions when conventional attacks became impossible propositions. The formation of the Special Attack Corps was based upon sound military precepts. Many of the deficiencies that the Japanese faced, like fuel, ammo, a shrunken pool of qualified pilots and outmoded airframes, could be rectified by a change in tactics. The high command was reluctant to adopt suicide bombing but did so only when the first units, formed as an impromptu reaction to overwhelming American firepower, had some successes in sinking an American escort carrier in the extended battle for Leyte. Suicide bombing was a directional shift in strategy and once adopted, became the method the Japanese used to counter American material advantage. It was logical not fanatical.
I remember Cheech and Chong's routine about kamikazes. Too funny. Not so funny if you become cannon fodder, like our Vietnam vets.

My father was in the US Navy and landed troops on the island beaches. Once the Japanese started suicide attacks they started finding Zeros that had been landed on beaches, the canopies broken out, because the pilots were locked in, and tracks leading into the jungle. Not all Japanese pilots were willing to waste their lives for the leader. He also said by this time of the war the Zeros seemed like they were made of tinfoil. Quality no longer existed.
I can’t help but think of the hubris,arrogance and misguided nationalism that had convinced the leadership of Japan,Germany, and Italy to think of the righteousness of their cause and of their superiority over what they perceived as weaker,lesser nations and races…the same leadership that saw their own people as a means to achieve their dreams of empire no matter the cost,however in the end those dreams were turned to dust,the people sacrificed their nations subjugated and occupied…a monument to the futility of ego and the lust for power..
