NASA has a new (tiny) Moon Base!! But why do we need it if we have SpaceX Starship??



NASA and Thales Alenia just rolled out their first Moon Base for the Artemis project! But why do we need a tiny module when we have over a thousand cubic meters in Starship? Does this base have any use at all?

  1. @TheAngryAstronaut why can't we just push forward and build a Nuclear tug (pusher) that's in orbit. Starship launches, docks with the pusher, and goes nuclear to the moon. Leave the tug in Lunar orbit, and use the HLS to land on moon. Leave moon, dock with tug(pusher), come back to earth. Methyox onlly used for getting to orbit and surface landing on moon. We have the tech. Multiple companies have the tech. Rolls Royce, Pulsar Fusion, DARPA. We did this in the 50s with NERVA and gave up.

  2. This is what I don’t understand. If starship can haul 100 plus tons to LOE why will it take so many flights to top off the tanker. I am assuming the tanker in a permanent orbit so how much fuel does starship carry? Why not build space tugs with the new fusion drives and use starship to get it up to LOE and use the more efficient tugs to lug the loads to the moon?

  4. Although I think this is a good report, my concept of a moon base is different than this. I look at the moon base as a long term habitation and research center. Lay down a Starship with the idea it is the core of the moon base and then add further construction immediately until you have a comprehensive habitable operation. I wouldn't bother about sending people out and about until the moon base itself is operable and can be safely relied on for habitation. A place that could sustain life for months or more at a time if something goes wrong. This process may include adjacent processing facilities to provide power, communication and possibly fuel for future use. The Starship itself should be designed for this use and be equipped to add additional core modules after landing. It also should include a workforce of 10 to 12 people in relatively short order. Get there and get it done quickly. Then greet the Chinese when they arrive and give them a passport.

  5. This looks like a module than can save one or two humans from a climate catastrophe on Earth, by putting them into a climate catastrophe in space. Life on the moon while sucking moon rocks will suck. Rock on!

  6. I can't say I agree with your reasoning. I expect Starship to be able to land in any region on the moon, and almost anywhere the habitat could land.

    But a permanent habitat on the moon does have a purpose. It could serve as pressurized storage between missions to the surface, and a space for performing long duration experiments in lunar gravity. HLS Starship would only spend a few days to a few weeks on the surface, while a permanent habitat could house experiments spanning months to years.

  7. the reason might be that NASA doesn't think starship will actually be ready when the time comes because they are concerned about issues not being resolved.

    therefore starship trend line falls short and Artemis needs a lunar base by a specific time.

    Thales Alenia will suffice for now .

  8. AA, why is NASA considering this design instead of using Starship (3:10) ?
    Because NASA no longer believes Starship will be ging to the Moon; Artemis 3 is all but cancelled now Atremis 4 is the only other confirmed NASA crewed lunar landing contract with SpaceX.
    After that, Artemis 5, 2029, goes to National Teams "Blue Moon" because, as Bill Nelson stated in May, "We want backup".
    That lunar lander has a lifespan of 15 missions, stationed at GATEWAY.

  9. 100 years ago, the Shackelton and Scott expeditions experienced cramped quarters in dangerous conditions. They could die, and did.
    The men that volunteered knew this, we've read their stories.
    Lunar expeditions will attract men and women of the same calibre; they can handle similar quarters and conditions, especially knowing that they are the first, leading the way.
