nice theories. I have a simpler one. humans that worshipped certain pagan deities would kidnap and sacrifice young persons and consume some of their blood. This combined woth stories of various diseases that bloat the corpse or cause madness and eye sensitivity. Regarding garlic since it fortifies the body against numerous diseases and even fight some of them as a panaceea was associated with these creatures as well. About most powers one of the abilities of possessed humans by demons is besides enhanced strength the ability to produce mass hallucinations in some cases even deceiving themselves. While they do not need invitations most houses were pretty sturdy so generaly provide a safe refuge. Crucifixes can indeed cause problems for those cultists if used with faith. An improper cross or an unbeliever using a crucifix will generally have no effect.
regarding sunlight while the mentioned cultists have no real with it, they do prefer darkness as it helps with their hypnotic powers and to kidnap people. Also they do prefer deserted places and cemeteries due to the demons that inhabit them.

Vampires are slaves of the Demons that is why they have aversions to the Crucifix. For those wandering why vampires can’t see their reflection in mirrors, I have heard that they use to use a silver coating, silver is believed to hold certain powers and have an association with purity and that apparently vampires have an allergy to, since the 1940’s they stopped using silver and now use aluminium.
I also heard that mirrors only reflect those that have souls. If anything I’ve found out is inaccurate please feel free to correct me ☺️
