Could Two Modern Destroyers Stop The 1942 IJN Indian Ocean Raid? (Naval Battle 119) | DCS

Today we simulate the first Indian Ocean Raid by the Imperial Japanese Navy First Fleet In 1942. We ask if two modern destroyers could have stopped the IJN fleet from winning the battle. The destroyers use SM-6 missiles to pound the IJN ships and ESSM and close range helicopters to defend from Japanese bombers.

  2. Dear GrimReapers. Can anybody explain why my DCS (latest build) suffers stutters/jerkiness near to the ground. I have tried everything I can find on the net. It still does it. Now have bound the pitch/roll to keyboard. Disconnected the X56 stick and throttle. And it still does it. Any ideas?? Its driving me mad trying to solve it. 3. Cap hiw about using the new Chinese ships as they go beast mide with the amout of missiles they carry. Other than that if someond could steer the ships wiuld make for harder targeting fof the bombers. Great vid though.

  4. Can you do a video like the china attack on australia but for russia or china attacking britain. Have it in around 2030 with type 26, FC/ASW (spear 5), have eurofighters and f35s using the new spear 3 missile.

Also can you do one like the videos youve done of the US navy transitting near iran but for britain too. Can use martlet missiles on the wildcats to attack the gunboats.

  5. The operation almost ended very differently for the IJN. British intelligence knew the IJN were coming, although underestimated the number of carriers. Somerville took his ships to sea not only to avoid them being caught in port by air strikes, but was positioned to attack the IJN. He planned to make a night attack using torpedo bombers from his carriers (iirc followed up with the 4 radar-equipped R-class battleships closing for a surface attack). The Royal Navy had been training for this kind of night attack for two decades (having learned lessons from Jutland, when the High Seas Fleet had been able to escape at night). Although the IJN also trained for night fighting, it was only surface fighting not air operations. Without radar they would have been taken by surprise and not able to put up much of a defense.
In advance Somerville sent 4 surface search radar-equipped Albacores to locate the IJN, two of which successfully located part of the fleet. But they were attacked by fighters & neither managed to get the sighting back to Somerville in a timely manner. (One was lost, the other suffered damage including its radio and could only make a full report after landing much later at dusk.) Based on incomplete and conflicting information Somerville launched a night strike anyway hoping another radar-equipped Albacore could locate the IJN, but it was unable to. The following day he received updated accurate intelligence that the IJN fleet was stronger than thought and wisely decided to withdraw.
If Somerville had received the Albacore sighting in time, a succesful night attack could have been devestating, easily cost the IJN several capital ships and changed the course of the war. (Great battles often turn on the smallest of details.)

  6. Kongo class are not capable of fighting actual battleships and winning => not actually battleships (whatever the Japanese Navy said); they were never more than battlecruisers, just ask USS Washington

Just like Hood is a bloody fast battleship, whatever the Royal Navy might say

  7. I haven't watched all of your videos so you may already have tried this, but would Russian ships do better against a big fleet? Since many Russian ships carry enough antiship missiles to worry modern carrier groups. Then if you add a carrier launching jets flows by your beautiful human boys carrying more antiship missiles…

  8. Chinese type 055s might have a better chance for taking out those carriers. Unless their missiles also get seduced by the battleships.

With just two modern destroyers, ammunition was always going to be a limiting factor. Even with 100% PK, 128 SAMs will only take down 128 aircraft, leaving you with 222 planes to be dealt with by choppers and CiWS. Assuming the carriers get to launch all of their aircraft.

Maybe if you had four destroyers you'd get closer to dealing with that swarm of aircraft, and possibly even take out four of the carriers. As you've concluded in the past, the swarm nearly always wins.

  9. I know before start looking that it was impossible with al this Zeros!!!! If you had 4 aliburk you may have succeded. Fun to see but very predicteble. The helicopters should have stayed near the ships and protected them better. They could not dogfight with the zeros.
