The auger machine drilling through the debris inside the tunnel, where 41 workers are trapped since November 12, has broken down, and will not be used anymore in the rescue operation, said Arnold Dix, an international tunnel expert helping in the rescue operation. The authorities have now deployed a vertical drilling machine at the site as the horizontal drilling machine failed four times.
