This videos are precious, you put in words the love i have for this movie, thank you so much <3
This video really changed my perspective on this movie- I have a harder time sitting still for this movie than when I was a kid, I don't think I pay as much attention to the small things anymore
12:06 – I was always expecting that someone will say "unindoltorated evil"
I did a speech in college for my public speaking class on the majesty of Fantasia. You articulated everything I love and adore about this movie better than I ever did!!! Bravo!!! ππ»ππ»ππ»ππ»
I did not see "Fantasia" until I was an adult when a boyfriend and I went to see it on a big screen. We..were..blown..away! I have been reminded of various scenes throughout my life. Once, I even recreated the 'Sorcerer's Apprentice' in a dream with the current boyfriend as Mickey!
………….
I remember being uncomfortable with the zebra Centaurs. If the minstrel Centaurs had been left in the film version I saw, it may have irredeemably sunk "Fantasia" in my eyes. Sure, historians and social critics should have the unexpurgated version available to them, but I am relieved that at least the most offensive characters have been purged from the version that so many little kids will see.
I can't wait for the other movies!
Then what do you freaking suggest about the Sunflower character you overly sensitive nerd? stereotypical pictures or images doesn't really harm any peoples if they're not meant to be propagandist messages.
So I don't really think the Black "centaurette" servants of the white Greek centaur girls are ever meant to offensive, but it was a depiction of what Black American were normally meant to be in US society of the time.
About the centars, animator Arthur Babbit married a teenager a few years prior. So, seeing the centarettes get dressed is unfortunately not TOO surprising.
If you haven't already, i would highly recommend you watch the tale of princess Kaguya since it's got a very similar meaning behind it to fantasia and it is also extremely well done.
I rewatched Fantasia yesterday, after about 20 years. My brother and I have always LOVED this movie. Ever since we first watched it as kids (we even had the VHS tape), its sounds and images have stuck with us.
Fantasia played a part in the development of our imagination and creating our little inner worlds. The dreamscapes we have always imagined as kids (and as adults) are strongly tied to all the beautiful sequences in Fantasia.
I can say with no exaggeration that without this movie my imagination and my dreams wouldn't be the same. I wouldn't be the same.
Thank you for this wonderful essay!
You're a truly gifted writer and these videos are so well-made, informative, thoughtful, and enjoyable. I feel like I've finally found the Disney critic I've been waiting for.
The last bit in this episode with the Mickey and Stokowski handshake reminded me of something only a few people know, but animation nerds may find interesting. I attended CalArts with many of the people who would go on to the big time in the Disney renaissance. For the student film exhibition one year, Mark Henn animated a parody of that handshake using our legendary design teacher Bill Moore as the conductor. Bill had assigned the class to produce an abstract film like in Fantasia, and he wasn't aware that they were adding the ending sequence. He was known for his vicious demeanor and demanding standards, and if memory serves, in Mark's animation Bill tapped his cigarette ashes into Mickey's hand. Many students including Joe Ranft worked on producing it in color without Bill's knowledge. The whole short film was beautifully done. I hope someone can track down that little bit of animation history. Thanks.
This video delivered on what it set out to do, however, I was easily swayed as Fantasia has always had a prized spot on my shelf. No Disney movie has captured my imagination as Fantasia did. I have never had a strong interest in classical music, but many of those sequences have stuck with me for years. The magna scene in the beginning of the dinosaur sequence was one of the most terrifying for me – the ultimate violence and destruction from the earth itself that led to the birth of the vast prehistoric world, almost as uninhabitable as the magma with its lurking dangers. Your narration was wonderful, and I hope we get to hear what your #1 video is!
Yeah, I think I know what the #1 spot is on your countdown.
I like coming back to this video in anticipation of the next ones. Fantasia is one of my favourites, tho it was a pretty late discovery for me, cuz the first time I watched it I was around 13 (Polish version never gained much popularity) Although I think all shorts are incredible, as a Tchaikovsky fan I do have a soft spot for the Nutcracker one.
I would also like to argue one thing – musically speaking the Rite of Spring is a far more ambitious piece than Bach. Maybe the Toccata wasn't as well known/over-played like it is today, but it almost goes by the numbers – after all Bach is kind of the father of classical music (especially romantic and late classicist). On the other hand, Stravinsky is the father of modern music, who breaks with tradition and starts experimenting with rules long cemented. Rite of Spring is one of his more ambitious and outrageous pieces, famously creating a lot of controversy with its first viewing. Stravinsky is as out there as classical music gets, thay's why imo it was truly a bold move to put it in generally a begginer friendly movie. Although I do love the dinosaurs.
Beautifull Movie esay!!ππ Very well done. I have always loved Fantasia. It was my first disney movie together with the little mermaid i got on vhs when i was 4 years old.
Hey, been a fan of yours since your first video on Snow White. I saw someone in one of the comment sections saying that you come across as too defensive in your reviews, and I had to speak up. If anything, I think people overhate Disney, so it's really nice to see someone who's willing to judge them more fairly. It's clear to see that you are a fan, but one also willing to look at them critically as well.
Anyways, please keep up the good work!
As a German Woman you being weirded out by Topless Women is the really weird part to me
I love your content; PLEASE keep making videos for each of the Disney cannon.
Theirs a laserdisc release of fantasia that has sunflower still in it
I always assumed the brown skinned hippos being portrayed as lazy was the racial stereotype the disclaimer was talking about
I love the rite of spring.
I did a video about the creation of the Night on Bald Mountain sequence. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EZdTWL9x_ZQ
Your Disney video essay are unmatched
I am totally enjoying this! π
I don't care if "The Pastoral" is the weakest. It is one of my favorites because there are so many cute characters in it.
You need to make a video about fantasia 2000ππ»ππ»ππ»ππ»
I honestly thought Fantasia might be #1, but now that itβs not, my mind is reeling to see what is! I hope youβre able to continue this series.
I can't wait for your next video! I love your video essays. I found them the other day and they inspired me to look back and watch every Disney movie in order.
I'm in love with your in depth discussion of the Disney movies, hope you can keep going
This was genuinely great. I honestly can't wait for you to get to Dumbo. It's my favorite Disney film and Favorite film of all time and can't wait to hear your take on it. Much love and subscription added!
please make a video of fantasia 2000 as well!
I'm so happy to have discovered your channel. It's only been a few hours, and I've already watched your video on Snow White, all the videos about Pinocchio, and I just finished the videos on Fantasia. I'll have a hard time formulating it, but I really like your analyses, and I find everything you say interesting. I can't wait to see your other videos on Disney movies, I'm very curious to know which is number 1. You are one of the best discoveries I've made recently. Thank you so much for your work on these videos, I learned a lot, and I just feel better actually. Today I was bored, I had nothing special to do, and luckily I watched your videos and I'm very happy that I did. Thank you so much
Your analysis of Fantasia was very interesting, I wanted to cry at the end and I don't even really know why, I think I just found it beautiful. I only saw Fantasia a few times when I was a kid, you made me rediscover it, I hadn't realized how much this movie had to offer.
(sorry for any possible mistakes, English is not my native language, I'm French).
I loved the ending of this second part. Specially when you included Fantasmic, my all time favorite Disney show.
And youβre right. You made me love fantasia!
These video essays are so incredible! Keep up the great work!
(And also thank you for discussing the racism in this movie, however briefly.) The Olympus section of this film (censored) had always actually been my favorite, and I was really upset when I found out that it was originally so bad.
I loved Dance of the Hours so much that my mom made me a huge stuffed hippo wearing a tutu.
Night on Bald Mountain continues to terrify me. I canβt even hear the music without getting a chill down my back. I saw this at the age of 5 in 1970; it was my first movie in a theater. My sister took me to it. I started to cry at this scene, embarrassing my sister beyond words. We still laugh about it to this day.
Instead of restoring Sunflower and Odica to Fantasia, Disney needs to restore Albert Sharpe's and Jimmy O'Dea's original dialogue to Darby O'Gill and the Little People and get rid of that insulting Disney+ dub-over.
Okay, back to Fantasia… I will forever wonder what Pastoral Symphony would have looked like if Vladimir Tytla had been its chief animator. But then, we would have lost a great deal if he HADN'T done Night on Bald Mountain.

"Everything is Everything, What is meant To Be Will Be. After winter must come spring, CHANGE comes eventually. Everything is Everything." -Ms. Lauryn Hill
THAT LAST "at least, not permanently" HAD ME GOING INSANE
Honestly, I've no idea why they erased black centaurettes. I specifically read older books to try to see how people thought back then, which vices they paraded, and boy isn't it a loud answer. It's pretentious to just erase historically-accurate part of media which people watch specifically to immerse themselves into a time period. As much as I'm not offended about how "white" centaurettes are virtually nude and only concerned with how to allure a centaur (being woman and all), those "black" centaurettes are just meant to be taken on a chin, I suppose, with a grain of salt.
Somehow I knew that all Fantasia segments are connected, but I didn't knew I knew it until I saw your video. It is almost as masterful as Fantasia itself
I absolutely hate what they've done to Deems Taylor's voice
In the last video you mentioned how disney wanted more things in the theaters to give it a interesting visions and now i want to know what they were and experience what he had in mind originally.
You have fans. We want more. KEEP GOING! π
I always love how you bring context into these video essays… like, who knew even scientist were impressed by the life Disney's animators brought into the film…
