Victoria could be forced to pause major infrastructure projects

Victoria’s workforce may be too small to meet its target of building 80,000 homes each year.

The state government could be forced to consider pausing major infrastructure projects to free up workers.

A recent decline in construction employees could push the government to intake more skilled migrants to take up the slack.

Victoria’s building and construction industry generated 333,000 jobs in August.

This was 21,000 less than in May.

  1. Bringing in terrorists sounds more like it. They arent sending money home to their families. They know that, we know that. The government really does appear to be willfully ignorant of reality.

  2. We don't need skilled migrants, we need our own people to be trained for the jobs needed. For every skilled worker lured from another country, that country loses a skilled worker. Stop the theft. Train our own. Offer incentives for our own to work. It's not rocket science, it's your freakin' job.

  4. If the government and large corporations are TELLING you to vote yes, how can you trust these people after the last few years – there is something big in it for them and it seems very very dangerous. VOTE NO. DO NOT TRUST THEM. LABOR OUT

  5. Give up big infrastructure because there are no workers to build houses, then grubbyment bring in thousands of migrants that then need to live in houses. Why do i feel like it's going around in circles.

  6. Why Victoria not consider to contact China engineering companies to do major infrastructure such as tunnel, bridge, metro construction while Victoria own work force can focus on one or two storey residential house building?

It is well known that China engineering can do this kind of complex infrastructure project faster and cheaper. This could free up a lot of money and work force.

In term of money saved, I recently see a cost comparison between the Indonesia high speed railway finished by China engineering company vs UK high speed railway still in progress by Europe engineering company. The Indonesia cost per km is only 1/6 of UK cost per km.

  7. I've been hearing "we need more migration to cover skills shortage"🐂 💩 since that grub Hawke got in. It's a lie. They've been using it as an excuse to flood the country with migrants ,particularly from non White Caucasian countries.

  8. pause you say; they haven't started! I will know they are serious when they get with employers and unions to set up thousands (yes) of apprenticeships with employers lined up to train and employ them.
Setting budgets is the 1st milestone in the process, necessary but not sufficient condition for completion of the programme. Not going to be in any 3-year term especially given the approval cycles and materials supply chain realities.
Will need to consider some standardization and pre-fabrication of structural elements (pre-cast) for public housing.
Ging to be a lot of process on the way.
