One of our beloved ranch horses gets a nasty gash on his shoulder. Luckily we found it in time to take him to the vet and get stitched up. The interns at the ranch also sharpen their skills on the beaches.

  10. Hey, can you get some powdered "slack lime?" (It's actually called slaked lime, but old time cowboys & farmers called it slack lime.) It's for sale on Amazon, but we used to get a pound of it in a paper bag at the local co-op.

    This would be for treating Boudain's injury after the stitches are gone. Seriously, one of my horses got a worse & deeper cut, and after 10 days the stitches didn't hold because the meat was so badly torn up. He was stalled to keep his motion at a minimum, but after a few weeks, I walked him around on a halter & lead rope for a few min., then I put him back in his clean stall. I kept giving him shots of penicillin & Combiotic, but I started rinsing the wound with water, the same way you are; then I patted it dry around the edges; then I sprinkled a dusting of slack lime on it. We could get "KRS" back then, which kept flies, etc. off the wound (we only sprayed KRS around the outside of the wound, but that was all that was necessary). I did this faithfully daily, for 4 mos. (This was a deep, terrible wound.) By that time, all the flesh had grown in perfectly, there was no proud flesh nor scarring, & all there was left to heal was a spot the size of a quarter that looked like he had a rug burn. After another month, he was completely healed, no scar and just as mobile as he ever was. I'm betting that the prayers helped, too. Anyway, I hope Boudain recovers completely, too. He deserves to.   13. Looks like Boudain is healing well. You have a great vet and Jordan is quite the horsewoman. Takes me back years ago to when a new guy tied one of our horses to a plank fence while he tended to something else. Tied him to the plank, not the post. Something spooked the horse, he reared back, pulled the plank off and the nails caught him and sliced him in just about the same spot as Boudain's injury. Horse was taken to the vet, sewn up and eventually healed up fine. The guy had told my granddad he had experience with horses…he did not. Got fired a few days later.

  14. Had to do the ultimate owner responsibility yesterday. Our 33 year old mare had come to the point where we had to put her down. Ruff day. But this morning she is running pain free again.

  19. I ain't no Cowboy ! But I have tried to be on Occasion – [ story time ] once upon a time I went on a Lonesome Dove bender – bought a cowboy hat – road horses with my buddy [ He is a real cowboy ] he put spurs on me and said let it rip ! I was content to just trout around [ never could get the right flow or motion correct ] . Ok now is when it gets good! This girl we were riding with ran off upset – so I did what O Gus would do – and chased after her ! Yep I wasn't ready – my horse got into a full sprint – I freaked out and jerking on the rains and digging my spurs in at the time full Gallup- horse tossed me [ kicked myself in back of the head 😂] gave me a killer scar over my right eye as a reminder – sent me straight to the alter at church the next morning ! So yep I ain't no Cowboy 🤠🙋‍♂️! But I started watching the ultimate Cowboy and I'm getting that it h again ! LETS GO

  20. Glad Boudain is on the mend Dale , I remember when mine decided to roll near an electric fence and cut his hind leg it took him a while to recover and my wallet 🤦‍♀️😂

  23. Big gash! My herd was hit by a tornado. I lost 6 and mangled 8. I did so much doctoring, I feel like I should be an honorary Vet. Emotional day that day. …that same year, my Morgan took a direct lightning strike 50 yards from me and was killed instantly. Wild year. Sad.
