  1. hello mate…can you do a review of the roland jc40 as a monitor for modelers. Im a pro user (from down the road from you…. Lyme Regis). Using FM9 for my gigs. All of the stereo out goes to FOH and ive been sending a feed to my old music man rp65. This setup works great just for stage monitoring, (I need to feel the air move behind me even when im on in ears or it feels weird). I always sent the mono feed to the musicmansummed to mono and without a cab block…interested in the roland because it has stereo inputs and two speakers. It means I can keep the stereo delays etc and use it with without the cab block…..I know its not frfr….but i never got on with that for stage monitoring. It feels like a possibly better version of the seymour powerstage. Love the channel and trust your balances opinion in these matters.

  3. Heh! I thought the B device had slightly more breakup than the A device.. Maybe double blind would be better as maybe you played slightly different between the two sections πŸ˜‰ .

  4. Fender is crazy if they think their offering in this box for that price is attractive in any way, especially at this stage in the modeling "game" in 2023…

  5. "It's not really digital fizz, it's just fizz" i think is key. When we don't like what we hear from a modeler we typically attribute it to digital. Yeah a mic up close and centered on cap in a real cab can capture plenty of fizz. I prefer also having a mic off-center / off-axis with some distance to mix in, gets you more of the amp in a room sound…with less of that fizz

  6. I thought the fender vox model had a little more brightness and glossy tone vs the helix. Helix sounds just a tad more full on the mids to me. But honestly they both sound like two different eqs of the same style amps which is expected. But no major differences to my ear. The high gain fender tones sound more muffled and fizzy to me but maybe thats just me.

  7. If you haven't applied any low pass filtering to the IRs, the Helix sounds much better in the top end overall. The Fender unit's strong point is the Fender amp models – pretty darn good. Helix sounded better on the rest, but neither captures the high response of the BE-100 well. The Helix has a better low end on the Friedman, but a real BE-100 through a Friedman 4×12 has more definition in the highs – not quite so wooly. But the low thump is there.

  8. Returning mine. I cant justify the 1700 for a better form factor and a poor UI experience. Helix is still a much better experience. I don't need pictures. I need more functionality. Im sure in a year or two this thing will be great but right now its half-baked.

  9. Comparing amp models on different units hasn't mattered for like 10 years. What matters is UI and for me the helix blows every other unit out the water in thay regard. Cant speak on the tmp as its brand new.

  10. To my ear, the note articulation of the Fender is perhaps better. The Helix has a sound I recognize as being more faithful to tube generation. Other than that I find the Fender to have an unpleasant compression in the EQ which I know is editable but I've observed it now with Rhett, with you, and with a couple channels I was previously unfamiliar with and forget the names. One further complaint is this harsh biting granular sound on the Fender that often comes through.

  11. Well, your audience (if you in fact get one) won't give a flying f. This is why I have used cheap guitars as backups. They know or care. You are the only one that does.

  12. All of these modelers have had a rough start. I think the TMP has to catch up a bit, but i think it only gets better from here. The next update will tell us a lot about the direction of the TMP.

  13. Feeling the Fender does low to mid gain pretty competently. Not differently enough to really matter. At higher gains, I felt that the Fender had more sandpapery fizz, like they didn't put in anti-aliasing filters or something. Aside from that aspect, the Fender sounds good. Having same IR on both is very nice to remove a big confounding variable.

  14. The weird thing is this is not the first video that I've heard something that sounds like clipping in the Tonemaster Pro on the higher gain sounds. The sound reminds me of the clipping sound I was able to achieve in my old GSP1101 when gain stacking. That's very concerning to me as I've been very interested in the Tonemaster Pro and that's not a sound I want to hear in such a high end modeller from a basic amp sound. Of course it could be user error and I can think of a number of ways for that sound to creep in but I've heard it in a few videos now. Interesting I couldn't hear the sound Rhett was going on about in his stream but then I wasn't wearing headphones and I did wear them to listen to this video and I've only heard the offensive sound when watching videos with these headphones. In this video I preferred the Helix. This is the first back to back video where I haven't preferred the Tonemaster Pro.

  15. Fender just sounds less digital, smoother and creamy. There is this digital fizz on the Helix. Love the helix for what it is and I didn't want to like the Fender. But I've been liking its tone.
