Designed in the Cold-War era, Flakpanzer Gepard was born and bred to destroy Russian (then Soviet) weapons. It had to wait for almost half a century to find out how good it really is in doing so.
Its size and deafening noise are matched only by its ability to annihilate everything in its vicinity.
No missile, no mortar can evade the Gepard’s relentless destruction.
But its true specialty lies in countering drones. The Russo-Iranian kamikaze drones have met more than their match in this formidable weapon.
A single Gepard unit is acknowledged for taking down over ten Shahed-136 drones and intercepting two cruise missiles.
The Gepard is equipped with two 35mm Oerlikon KDA autocannons, establishing it as one of the most potent self-propelled anti-aircraft guns globally. Each gun has a firing rate of 550 rounds per minute and is loaded with 320 High Explosive (HE) rounds, along with 20 Armor-Piercing (AP) rounds designed for ground targets. Its effective Anti-Aircraft (AA) range extends to approximately 2.17 miles (3.5 kilometers) with standard rounds and can reach up to 2.8 miles (4.5 kilometers) when employing Frangible Armour Piercing Discarding Sabot (FAPDS) rounds. Typically, in a regular engagement, 20 to 40 rounds are discharged at a single target.
This firepower is more than enough to annihilate any low flying aircraft!

Gepard was never obsolete. It's just mostly that missiles outranged them and were more efficient. Now, against drones; it's more efficient than the missiles, and it can still wipe out any jet. Youtube search; 35mm AHEAD if you don't believe me.

It's cool and all but the canons don't mean a thing. It's electronics may be horribly outdated. Those Shahed's are small planes, it'll recognize those. But what of the small drones it won't recognize the target profile off? I know our (Dutch) Gepards were a beast to keep up-to-date but ours had a different electronics suite. How up-to-date are the German ones? Otherwise it's just a matter of time before the russians learn to jam or work around them.

The shahed kamikaze drones are cheap at $20k a piece. However, the 35mm HE ammo from a Gepard is only $1k a piece. This is one reason Gepard is important, so many other AA solutions are not cost effective at all.
