Richard Marles 'a failed Defence Minister' for committing to 'symbolism of AUKUS'

The Australian’s Foreign Editor Greg Sheridan says Australians have to draw the conclusion “Richard Marles is a failed Defence Minister” with Australia’s current defensive structure.

While AUKUS is Australia’s biggest defense investment, the nuclear submarines will not be operational until the late 2030s with no immediate missile programs acquired despite Indo-Pacific tensions.

“The government has decided, because it has committed to the symbolism of AUKUS, it is not going to do anything about acquiring a military ability for Australia over the next ten years,” Mr Sheridan told Sky News Australia.

“And this sort of nonsense of moving a few blokes from Adelaide to Brisbane and then trying to sell the media that this is a dramatic restructuring and it’s all about deterring China.

“This is the worst of Australian Defence Syndrome – where we do nothing but we talk a big game.”

  1. What a load of partisan crap. Marles has acted with all responsibility within budget parameters. You never saw Dutton in the Philippines, Indonesia or India. Let alone in the US looking at subs. Dutton made such a who ha of Aukus but did SFA because thats the Noalition way. 9 years of nothing but bluster from the LNP and they are trying to convince us that they can do better. What a load of BS.

  2. Scrapped our armour capacity, grounded our choppers, sent our fuel stockpile to USA, naval vessels are poorly armed, what subs, what aircraft, what missiles?
We have no industrial capacity. We are stuffed.

  3. our defence capability is a disgrace, the best way to prevent war is to be ready for war, thats why other countries have compulsory military training, something australia should have, we live in a fools paradise.

  4. This whole Labor government that starts with Albo, then Blackout Bowen and on down the line are a failure. Broken promises and lies with their head in the sand and their only focus on renewable energy and EV’s, oh and of course Labors, vote for the Voice, we will tell you all about it once it’s voted in. VOTE NO to the voice.

  5. Yet another failed minister within a failed government.
Albanese, Burke, Bowen, Marles, Wong, Plibersek and more, make up a one term labor government.
This government has touched up the pocket of every single money earner in Australia so far, and is intent on introducing even more economic idiocy on the Australian public.

  6. Who are we actually defending ourselves against? When was the last time our military was used to defend us and not just to bolster someone else's forces towards their ends and not ours? We are being fed a crock of crap. Reds under the bed and the Yellow peril, sorry but that's so 1960's and passe.

  7. we have enough Military to defend 12km of coast line for 15 minutes….so it doesnt matter the number of soldiers getting shifted around. We need more Naval and Air force bases all over Australia and about 400,000 military in total (we have 80,000 , unsure if defence civilians and reservists are included in this number) …we have the same land mass as the USA and they have 1.4 million active soldier….Indonesia could come to Australia with brooms and take over our country.
