I was already seeing this as a mix of Nova Drift's upgrades and Soulstone Survivor's gameplay. So, what I'm hearing is that you want Nova Drifts Wild Mods and Super Mods, and Soulstone Survivor's tagging system with passive upgrades that apply to specific tags.
You'd probably need to alternate between branching upgrades and modifiers, or maybe even give a choice between a few of each at level up.
I think you might enjoy the game God of Weapons, I recently got it and it’s super fun, it has a bunch of classes and fun bosses

Definitely seeing some of the early 20 Minutes Till Dawn situation after a couple of runs here. More 'add to your attack' and less 'change your method of attack.'
Good variety of minions and stuff though.
