  1. I don’t like debates about residuals without someone on the other side to debate. I learn more and have a better understanding when two sides discuss. But the reality is the writers and actors should get what they negotiate considering the whole industry grinder to a halt when those two groups decided enough was enough.

  2. “points” on the backend would only work if studios would be transparent on ratings, which they currently aren’t. Netflix could still cancel a show after 2 seasons and tell the actors/writers “SORRY FOLKS YOU DONT GET ANY EXTRA MONEY BECAUSE THE SHOW DIDNT MAKE ANY MONEY AND WE DON’T have to prove it to you! nonsense!

  3. One of the things that John uses as a reason that actors shouldn’t get residuals is the idea that they have no skin in the game if the project does poorly. Well residuals are directly link yo who well a project performs. There a reason why the actors on shows like Seinfeld, or friends made Hugh amounts of money off residuals compared to other sitcoms of that area. The better and more popular ur show is the more residuals you get the and worst off or less views ur show get the lower amount of residuals you get.

  4. I’d argue that whoever plays Abby is gonna have to be not one of but THE best performance in the series because it’s a character that everyone will star out hating that we have to learn to understand and that’s gonna be difficult

  5. I still think Katy M. O'Brian is the perfect Abby. As soon as I saw her in Mandalorian season 3, I wanted her to be Abby. She's got the look, the body, and the attitude that would make a great Abby.

  6. I have more of a philosophical issue about residuals when it comes to actors (as opposed to writers) because it's a matter of their moving image being consumed in perpetuity, regardless of whether or not they own the content.

  7. I like what Chris Stuckmann said about The Dark Knight Rises. While re-watching it, he was thinking about all the logistical criticisms levelled at it constantly… until he wasn't. He eventually was just swept away by the escapism & magic such a movie encapsulates. He talked about the editing being designed to immediately throw you into the next thrilling scene; being emotionally invested & making you care in the moment. It's only 'the Blu-ray scrutinizing critic brigade' (😁my words) who of course, with repeat viewing & dissection, revel in highlighting the inconsistencies a general audience would rarely pick up on, on their first viewing.

  8. I was never a boss, or put money into projects and risk not making a profit.
However, I do agree with the mindset behind not earning residuals or making a deal of earning less money to participate in the residual. But definitely under the condition of writers and actors getting paid reasonably (more).
I mean, it would definitely be nice if workers ( everyone who worked on the project, not just the writers and actors.) get a fair amount of bonus after maybe a period of time when the project is proven profitable. But getting a residual after years of that project being done? That's a bit unreasonable.

  9. I don’t like when people make argument that say because one worker gets something that other workers don’t get. Therefore those workers shouldn’t get those things. No all workers should benefit from the profit that their labor helps to create point blank period.

  10. John also makes an argument about not having anything to lose. Wish is not true. You make a project that doesn’t do well you make less money in residuals, and if you keep making projects that don’t do well you make less money overall having a negative effect on your work. John seems to be putting more value on the money that goes to make these projects then the labor that goes into the project. To me they are both at the very least equally important, I would say the labor is actually more important.

  11. I suppose these writers/actors feel like they are entitled to these residuals. That's not how the rest of the world works. Years ago a certain electrical engineer made a chip that detects the type of USB charger that is plugged into a phone. It detected whether it is wall charger, a host charger (as in a computer) or hub charger (as in a peripheral connected to a computer) and adjusted the charge rate so that the battery doesn't blow up. Companies bought billions of this chip using this novel detection scheme. Well, the engineer used all the company design tools and manufacturing resources to produce the chip. I assure you they were paid well for their design and novel ip made. However, they will never get a cut for the billions and billions of chips that were sold. The engineer even assigns the rights to the patent to the company as a condition of employment. The writers and actors should be paid what they are worth. But I'm not sure if a perpetual payment plan for work that has been long completed is warranted.
