The fight scene in Dol Guldor is awesome
Big defender of the Hobbit films me. But some of the CGI during the battles is very iffy.
I also a big Alfred fan! 😂 I find him hilarious!
Thanks R & T for knocking this one out. As usual, impeccable timing. Gives me a reason to break open another case of Bud later. Any ideas what your next series of films are going to be???
Yep … you get a “like” before I’ve started watching.

Much love
Rob and Trin
Rob, it’s Moot not Mute bro 😂 I learnt this very recently 😂
You mentioned that you played LOTRO. One of the Hunters skills is called Bard's Arrow in reference to the Hobbit
i JUST realized rewatching myself this past weekend that the boatman's son is now on Outlander!
9:39 And did he follow his feet and change his stars??
From what I understand, they only intended to make 2 films for The Hobbit. But VERY last minute, (towards the end of filming for #2 I believe) Peter Jackson and crew were told they needed to stretch what they had and make it into 3 films to match the original trilogy. Which explains why some moments drag in Desolation Of Smaug and why Battle Of The Five Armies was significantly shorter than the other films.
2 things damaged the movie most. Alfred and his master. Completely unnecessary. And tauriel kili love story. Also throw in a bit too much cgi. Otherwise love the movies.
Regarding the runtime, this third movie was literally unfinished when the theatrical version was released, as they were so crushed for time they had to leave some sequences out in order to get the FX done by the deadline. The omitted scenes were mostly action sequences that could be dropped without affecting the plot. However, the brief battle between the Elves and Dwarves before the Orcs arrived was cut, which one could argue did change the story in a minor way. So this "Extended Version" is really what Jackson originally wanted the theatrical version to be, plus some added gore that would have had to be cut in theaters for a PG-13 rating.
Also, to be fair, Thorin never actually promised anyone a share of the treasure hoard. He promised future prosperity as trade was resumed between the mountain and the lake. However, the lake men were well within their rights to demand compensation for the losses the Dwarves had brought upon them by waking the dragon. Had Thorin been in his right mind, he would have seen that.
I duuno about you guys but when Smaug first opened his eye, it was like watching a rerun of Sherlock Holmes again. Those guys cant hide behind things like makeup and CGI!
The thing Galadriel uses to make the light when she "banishes" Sauron, is the Phial of Earendil – the gift she gave to Frodo (which Frodo and Sam then use in the cave/fight with Shelob). Always love your reactions, and glad to hear that you still find Tolkien's world better than others
Saruman IS corrupted by this point, he only sanctions the assault on Dol Guldur because his hand was forced and he wasn't yet ready to reveal himself
The 3 elf rings are worn by elrond gallygirl, and gandalf. Some think it's weird for a human to wear one of the elf rings, but gandalf isn't human. He is a wizard that and the embodiment of fire. So the fire ring was a natural gift for the elves to give him.
Gandalf has one of the 3 elvin rings the ring of fire and ised its power to inspire the people of middleearth to help ,galadriael has the elvin ring of air ,and the third is heald by Elrond but you can't see them on there hands unless you hold another ring I'm pretty sure .the fellowship expect frodo only seen a wight light on galadriaels hand
In case you were wondering…
"So began a battle that none had expected and it was called the Battle of Five Armies, and it was very terrible. Upon one side were the Goblins, Wild Wolves and upon the other Elves and Men and Dwarves.". – J.R.R. Tolkien. 😅
J.R.R. Tolkien uses Goblins and Orcs interchangeably. The Goblin forces had Goblins from the Misty Mountains, Orcs from Gundabad and Orcs from Dol Goldur plus Giant Bats plus the afore mentioned Wolves/Wargs.
On the good guys side you had the Elves of Mirkwood, the Men of Laketown and Dain Ironfoot and his clan of Dwarves from the Iron Hills, plus Gandalf, plus Bilbo, plus Thorin and company plus the Great Eagles.
"Who's this!?"
That is Azog as he should have been until the decision came to make him cgi instead. The cgi Azog looks terrible by comparison.
Dont feel bad for the Dragon. They are evil in nature, they were created by Morgoth just like Orcs and Balrogs.
Smuge was the last of the great fire drakes. None was recorded after this time in Middle Earth. Don't feel bad though. There is no such thing as a good dragon in the legendarium of Tolkien. Dragons were created by the first dark lord Morgoth as weapons of mass destruction. Morgoth was Suron's master before he (Morgoth) was thrown into the void by the Valar known as Tulkas.
Balin is my favourite you see his tomb in moria in the fellowship of the ring
Coulple of notes to help. Gandalf dose have one on the 3 elven rings. He keeps the ring of fire Narya. also when Galadriel was in her dark looking form that is her calling on her rings power. Her ring is the ring of water Nenya. The ring of air Vilya is keep by Elron. Suron must be pissed. The 3 elven rings was there before him and the nine and despite that he could not take them.
RIP Smaug his death was sad for me to aint gonna lie lol
Lord of the rings is also 3 books not 1. This was how Peter Jackson wanted to do the lord of the rings but kind of glad he didn't cause hell this would turn my marathon into like 3 days lol
16:45 and basically this is how he becomes the eye.
She banishes him and sends him away from the mortal/physical form.
Yeah, turns out Benedict is a great method actor
Love the channel. One thing, it sounded like you said "mute point" and not "moot point".
They dragged it out because they wanted 3 movies instead of 2. Corporate Greed is the reason for any problems.
I'm surprised you didn't recognize Benedict Cumberbatch as Smaug. He didn't even use make up. 🤣
The 3 elven rings are owned by Galadriel (air), Elrond (water), and Gandalf was given ownership of the ring of fire. I'm not certain but I thought Galadriel used the Air ring against weakened Sauron in the rescue of Gandalf when she was looking like a real bad-ass. If I'm wrong, I hope somebody will correct me.
In LOTR (Fellowship) – the scene when Arwyn (carrying Frodo) crossed the river and dared the Nazgul to cross. Lord Elrond had used his ring of water to put a protection spell around Rivendell. Arwyn knew to call on that protection spell by the river. The look on Arwyn's face when the tidal wave of 'water horses' appeared was the look of surprise. Arwyn did not know the manner in which the protection would work.
You should really go watch the bonus features with Benedict. He actually did the motion capture for Smaug too and it’s hilarious.
Fan fact: Saurons voice is Cumberbatch too.
So not only did Benedict do the voice work, was also the mo-cap artist as well. Heres a nice behind the scenes featurette of the movie free on youtube that shows him working, talking about it personally, and others talking about the process. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wu9XPEdBelY
Saruman was searching for the ring for himself for some time before the meeting in Rivendell. He was already corrupted just by studying the devices of the enemy. He didn't want Sauron disturbed because it might call attention to something that had lain dormant for 3000 years and he had hoped Sauron might lead him to the ring while still in a weakened state. He only helped to drive him from Dol Guldur to keep his own purposes hidden. It was too late anyway, as the Nazgul had already rebuilt Mordor and Sauron fled only to retake his realm there.
The reason, I think, other than special effects. For the Nazghul to look different. Is that they take a more Ethereal form where they are anchored. Since when they die, they return to their anchor point. In LOTR, they are physical as they are away from their anchor point. Which was Mordor, while here it's Dol Guldur, until Galadriel banished Sauron to Mordor, with all his minions.
If you listen closely Benedict's voice for Smaug is the same as his voice for Dormammu
Rob, you mentioned that you felt bad for Smaug and he could destroy many orcs, but he is a creature of evil, bred by Morgoth. Dragons were not neutral, natural creatures. They were utterly evil, corrupt, prideful and greedy. (Unlike in D&D, that has good aligned dragons)
Gandalf's concern was that Sauron might enlist the help of Smaug to deploy against the free folk. This was part of the purpose of sending the group back to Erebor. Smaug's death probably helped the eventual fight against Sauron in Lord of the Rings.
