For centuries the Anasazi of the Southern US have been thought of as peaceful farmers, living in an almost utopian society. However, this has all changed with startling and controversial new research that suggests a far darker side to these ancient peoples; Cannibalism. However, where did this custom come from and were the Anasazi practitioners or victims?

Good science isn’t afraid of criticism, especially when the criticism rooted in moral objections…
They must have been Right-Wing extremist. The Diñe people are heroes to this country & to suggest this history is taboo. I believe all peoples who were facing famine through the ages turned to cannibalism. Hell it’s in the Bible so taboo or survival.
Keep investigating. I really am fascinated with the real history of the Southwest.
Any animal can be eaten, why not humans? Wouldn’t be logic.
Nobody calls New Mexico the American south.
When someone simply says the South concerning America, it is assumed you mean the Doutheadt.
If you mean the Southwestern US, it should be written as such. From the headline the Creek and Cherokee came to mind. Kind of duplicitous.
I'd try it ….wouldn't have to be starving either
In many instances, cannibalism was also a way of joining with the soul of the one eaten.
I’m sure it wasn’t intentional but this does come across as pro-cannibalism a few times
The established narrative dictate only man, white man, white Christian man are evil. Every native person were victims of course.
This notion that his evidence is racist or dehumanizing is so ridiculous. He has done really thorough science here and deserves credit! It’s not offensive to say that people in the past did terrible things. There’s actually substantial evidence that if cannibalism did occur it did so because of severe drought caused by rapid onset of climate change. These people were starving to death.. I have no clue what its like to be living in those desperate conditions. None of us do.. so how can we cast judgement? The Aztecs slaughtered tens of thousands as ritual sacrifice.. they were proud of it. History is history.. we are bound by nature to find what truth we can in the past as it as not as we want it to be.
These days the political elites imprison those that threaten their power.
here in Aotearoa New Zealand the cannibal history of Maori people doesn't diminish their mana (reputation, high status) at all!
Southwestern US is not the same as the South-there is evidence of cannibalism in both areas —very different places, very different groups -same continent
At the end (around 46 min) they dont bring up religion, ritual cannibalism isnt unheard of, doesnt have to be to control the larger population per se, it prob would help but i suspect it was just religion at the large scale
The Inca and many tribes of South America when their relatives die they clean the bones and bury them in their houses. So that they can be with them after they die. They also give offerings to these people. That’s why there’s cut marks on the bones and a lot of the bones have been cut. These are not cannibals they are people who worship their ancestors. I’m pretty certain
Whole comment section coping about literal cannibals and became 'soul eating' experts
Human is underrated. It tastes a lot like chimpanzee. 😋
Don't fantasize that cannibalism was uncommon in Europe.
Oops. Can't offend people who have nothing to do with the ancient practice.
No matter what they died they belong to the people the land the ancestors return our spirit people and to elders how would you like us to digger your c ancestors grave return the people
Of course cannibalism was wide-spread amongst the native Americans. It's an established fact .
The truth about our long dead ancestors is hurting my modern day feelings
Logic. The survivors did the eating. Prove me wrong.
Who removes the bone marrow of their enemies? I get why they wanted to denied the claims but at least propose something that makes sense.
An elder of the Navaho tribe is airing YouTube videos, saying he's sharing the spoken history previously kept only among his tribe.
Saying that the Navaho were originally buffalo hunters of the Great Plains that met the Anasazi as they followed herds South, the small bands of Navaho hunters would be killed outright or taken captive. He also says the language barrier between the tribes was insurmountable.
The Najaho elder also says that the Anasazi were evil enough so that all the tribes surrounding their territory finally called a council where they agreed that the Anasazi should be wiped out down to the last infant. Total genocide.
I'm Mexican, descendant of MATLAZINCA culture of Central Mexico. My ancestors were ruled over by the AZTEC culture. Those same cuts, scrapes and breakages can be seen in cannibal victims in all mesoamerica sites. It's evidence we can't deny.
It's a shame, the native American do not know the truth about their people. Yet they claim to know oral tradition. Sorry but scientists have to educate you on the history of your people.
Possibly warfare also spiritual reasons maybe no rain and needed a sacrifice they thought differently then with gods
You have to love all the deniers. They all have a certain appearance and language don't they? Almost like someone tells them what to say.
Cannibalism was far more common than people realize among North American Indians. There is one account of Winnebagos killing and eating hundreds of members of an Illinois tribe that had brought them food aid in time of famine. I guess they wanted a little more.
When Science is seen through the lens of Politics We all lose. There's no doubt the Anasazi were cannibals, and that's Science, not Politics.
If the theory of the Anasazi disappearing due to a natural disaster caused by climate change is true, they could have been eating anything they could as they were likely starving to death.
The Anasazi disappeared roughly the time the Mexica began their journey. The Mexica came from a mythical place in the north of Mexico. No one knows why the Mexica began their journey, and no one knows why the Anasazi culture disappeared. They both had sophisticated building techniques and complex astronomy as well as being masters of hydrology and agriculture, and they both practiced large – scale cannibalism. Interesting.
another myth of " fist nation" fanatics busted.
23:30 « the steaks are so high »? They still are? Have those experimental archaeologists gone a step further?
I guess this is where the saying comes from « the proof is in the pudding ».
I believe it was giants
How many killer eat their kills for food. There are a lot of killers out there in every cultures. A person with mental illness? Where is the right from wrong? Some people prefer meats for meals. Evil people want to control others by being dictators? where is the ❤?
I'm more inclined to believe the guy with all the evidence than the guy that claims too much evidence means you have nothing
Cannibalism is something that belongs to homo sapiens. Judging is also something that belongs to homo sapiens.
22:06 he’s just trying to prove scientific fact he’s not calling all Native Americans cannibals. There’s been many instances of European cannibalism such as the Donner party. That doesn’t mean all European Americans are cannibals. It’s not an attack.
Starvation and humans would have been easier to catch
Protein is Protein.
Well, when you ran out of food for days or months, then you have to back in barbarian time, to survive.
I can totally understand why the descendants of the Anasazi are upset at what has been found . BUT I personally believe about the cannibalism as i see the proof of it. The people who said no it didn't happen haven't showed me any proof that it didn't other than saying it didn't happen etc or something along those lines. Humans are animals too. Science doesn't care about being PC
