Something I think a lot of people fundamentally misunderstand about Twin Peaks first season is they think it's going to be some kind of dark mystery show about murder and the secret underworld of the unexplained, where an FBI agent explores a creepy town and busts monsters.
In reality it's a soap opera with some darker and paranormal aspects and themes. It's different kind of soap, one directed by David Lynch, but it's a soap.
I think that's why some people go in a bit disappointed.
