August 2023 marks 78 years since the U.S. dropped two atomic bombs over the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki that ended World War II. “CBS Mornings” previously interviewed two survivors who recalled the Aug. 6, 1945, bombing that destroyed Hiroshima. CBS News foreign correspondent Ramy Inocencio interviewed Toshiko Tanaka in August 2020 and CBS News senior White House correspondent Weijia Jiang spoke with Tayeko Shitama in May 2023.

I’m sorry to say, as much as I would want to rid the world of nuclear weapons, it will not happen or at least not anytime soon. I understand most people would question why we carry such deadly things and wonder when the world would end, but honestly the countries carry these for one simple reason, power. In the end of the day the only thing global powers care about, no matter the people in them, is who has the bigger stick and they’ll do anything to reach for a bigger stick
Forgive who?? Excuse me but, Japan is the one that invaded U.S and other asian countries such as china korea PH and many other. Becuz of atomic bomb, millions of lives were saved from Imperial Japan killing millions others in asia.
This just breaks my heart. Why do civilians have to suffer? During wars it’s always the civilians taking the hit for higher up government officials despite having little to do with the conflict, it’s sickening and is probably one of the worst byproducts of humankind existing
Let's be FRIENDLY to our neighboring countries. I had to laugh at this statement because it was 80 years too late. It should've been Japan's motto before they started invading and wreaking havoc to its neighbors . Don't get me wrong I do feel the pain and suffering for the A bomb survivors. Or the guilt suffered by those who built the bomb. However, nobody seem to be talking about those who have died and survived the Japanese atrocities. My grandfather and most of the men in his village we're lined up in the plaza and executed/beheaded by the Japanese. Nor the countless women who were raped. Or the males babies being thrown in the air and skewred by their bayonets. They were just as innocent as the victims of the atomic bomb. It took 75 years for my uncle to finally talk to us about the war and him witnessing his father being beheaded. Yett he talks about forgiveness in order to live peacefully. So yeah we ARE the friendly neighbors of Japan…we say make peace not war!!!

For those who think the US is to be blamed, remember the US didnt want to get involved until Pearl Harbor. As Emperor Hirohito said…we have awakened the sleeping giant. Indeed they did.
During WWII Japan killed 250,000 Chinese civilians in retaliation for the Doolittle raid on Tokyo. Any village within 20 miles of the escape route used by the American flyers was attacked, all the men and boys killed, the women raped and then sent to "comfort stations" to be sex slaves for the Japanese Army. Chinese farmland and water wells were poisoned, causing even more famine and death. Excuse me if I have no empathy for the Japanese civilians that suffered during a war they started and conducted with less humanity than the Mongols.
We should not have these weapons' ever. I watch this story and all I can do is cry. War is hard but killing this amount of civilians is just wrong.
I feel bad for these innocent people. However, as a Korean, I must say it was necessary. What the Japanese did in Asia during the war absolutely horrendous. They took menand made them work in terribl conditions and dumped their bodies in a hole. They took our women as sex slaves. They used people for their experiments(unit 731)… They were given many chances to stop but didn’t. This bomb freed us. Too bad that their government didn’t care about their citizens but was busy protecting their pride.
Sadly japan was bent on winning a lost war. Hitler had offed himself and Germany surrendered but japan wasn’t done. They were still torturing pows and attacking the Chinese. They also didn’t believe the first nuke had been dropped and forced a second.
We didn’t even evacuate our own citizens living near the test site.

Its sad that the average Nuclear Warhead we have now is 15000 times more powerful than both the bombs dropped on Japan. One warhead can wipe out most of the eastern seaboard. the civilians didn't deserve to be punished for the stupidity of their armed forces.

Japan's military leaders are to blame for everything. They firstly started the war long before pearl harbor by invading China and killing thousands of civilians. Then when they had obviously lost the war they refused to surrender forcing the hand of the United States..

What about the brown people who were chased out of their homes and tested the trinity atom bomb on top of them. That story needs to be told. The people were were thrown out of their homes so America could build the infrastructure to work and test the atom bomb. Its a shame how white Americans at that time treated minorities in this country. This country needs some healing for all the people America wronged.

My grandmother is in her 90s and she doesn’t want to talk about the war. She has talked about it in front of me only 2 times.
One of them is that she saw the mushroom cloud of Hiroshima.
The other is that she wants to eat white rice for meals, not other kinds of grains that are considered more healthy these days. Because she could never eat white rice during the war. I could never laugh at her words.

The Japanese were so cruel and evil towards the civilians in the countries they evaded. She should blame her then government and military that this had to happen.
There was and is no atomic bomb. These were incendiary attacks.
The Japanese people can cry all they want but they were not the ones who were r-, tortur-d, ab-sed, mutil-ted, behaded, k-lled by their own soliders. So heartless to the people in other nations who suffered under the Japanese Occupation.
In Hiroshima and Nagasaki, tens of thousands of unarmed and innocent Japanese people were tragically used as guinea pigs for new weapons testing. This can only be attributed to the fact that they were Japanese and considered a colored race. As someone belonging to the white race, speaking about this may be discomforting, but precisely because of my own racial background, I can instinctively and intuitively understand these aspects of the issue clearly.
In any case, this problem is far from being as simple as Pearl Harbor or Bataan. Furthermore, towards the end of the war, there were hysterical accusations against the Nazis for attempting to use poison gas against the Allied forces, seen as a violation of the Hague International Treaty and a defiance of humanity and God. Yet, the same country that made these accusations and created such an uproar used weapons far more cruel and inhumane than poison gas on unarmed civilians without any means of defense. This issue should not only concern Japan but also the conscience and common sense of the entire world, unless we want the eradication of God and justice from our world and humanity.
If the Japanese would’ve surrendered, the bomb wouldn’t have been dropped
