Retired US Army drill sergeant Lamont Christian rates US military boot-camp scenes in movies and TV shows for realism.
Christian breaks down the early stages of boot camp in “Full Metal Jacket” (1987), with R. Lee Ermey; and “Cherry” (2021), starring Tom Holland. He looks at weapons and physical training in “Forrest Gump” (1994), starring Tom Hanks; “Jarhead” (2005), with Jake Gyllenhaal; “Hacksaw Ridge” (2016), with Andrew Garfield; and “Band of Brothers” (2001). He explains the plausibility of boot-camp scenarios in “Captain America: The First Avenger” (2011), starring Chris Evans; “Private Valentine: Blonde & Dangerous” (2008), with Jessica Simpson; and “Tribes” (1970). Christian also looks at the drill sergeants and drill instructors in “An Officer and a Gentleman” (1982) and “Stripes” (1981), with Bill Murray.
Christian served in the US Army for 33 years as a combat infantryman, with 11 years in the basic training environment. He retired in 2018 as the command sergeant major of Fort Jackson, the Army’s main training center for basic combat training. He is now the director of the Warrior PATHH program at the Big Red Barn Retreat, where he helps veterans experiencing post-traumatic stress.

When you're low crawling under live fire, it feels a lot closer than 20 feet!
ex-military myself. US Navy, 6 years. Went through navy nuke school, survived to the end so the entire thing, but they felt my knowledge wasn't sufficient so I went to TPU for 12 weeks and then became a conv. EM. Anyway still I went through the entire mental training, learned a lot, and got a few NECs out of the deal. (Navy Enlisted Codes – specialties essentially)
I do not want an 'inclusive' military. The military should be very exclusive. It should weed out softies, idiots, snowflakes, and anyone who thinks they are special.
The military, no matter the branch, needs people who stand above, not those who drag people down.
We also don't need 'trans' in the military, makes our military a laughing stalk to foreign powers.
Hacksaw Ridge touched my soul.
Thank you sir
R lee earmy was only supposed to be an advisor on full metal jacket, so he was sitting in on the auditions. Nobody satisfied him with his performance so he volunteered to Stanley Kubrick (PBUH) to do the role himself.
Love the shout out to Jack Webb's THE D.I. at the end. Great film.
Thank you sir for your services and to all of you who also served
I was 15 when full metal jacket came out. Snuck in with some friends. Several men left the movie during the Gunny Hartman scenes, We realized later they were the right age to have been marines at boot camp during Vietnam and found the boot camp sequences a little too vivid for fond memory.
your brothers is arms will die for you you should be able to die for them thats one lesson learned
Women don't have to cut the hair huh? More selective equality
CSM Christian, ex Army 91 Alpha
….85-93
CSM's run the show
will never forget DS Mitchell, 2001 …"ya know what the problem is? you're not scared! we can't hit you anymore!"
Anytime I was forced to do cadence during a battalion run I always did my 'War Pigs' cadence. SNCOs learned quick to never let me do cadence although, I had one gangster 1SG who liked it so much he frequently used it himself. Man became the villain but was still a sham shield deep down. I miss that man.
17:08 for 11b/c it was called the bayonet. Is it still called the bayonet for anyone who went through OSUT at Benning recently?
This was interesting. Thank you for sharing.
Ok, this explains a lot.
Shock n aww, fallacy, he’s using all the words,,,, if you know you know
I know Heartbreak Ridge was not a Boot camp situation, it still would have been fun to watch CSM Christian break it down & point out all the things they did wrong
This guys was one of the ones that got rid of shark attacks? Straight up weak sauce dawg.
