Elden Ring is an action role-playing game developed by FromSoftware and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. The game, directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki, was made in collaboration with fantasy novelist George R. R. Martin, who provided material for the game’s setting. Elden Ring was released for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S on February 25, 2022.

Elden Ring takes place in the realm of the Lands Between, sometime after the destruction of the titular Elden Ring and the scattering of its shards, the Great Runes. Once graced by the Ring and the Erdtree which symbolizes its presence, the realm is now ruled over by the demigod offspring of Queen Marika the Eternal, each possessing a shard of the Ring that corrupts and taints them with power. As Tarnished—exiles from the Lands Between who lost the Ring’s grace and are summoned back after the Shattering, players must traverse the realm to ultimately find all the Great Runes, restore the Elden Ring, and become the Elden Lord.[1][2][3]

Elden Ring is an action role-playing game played in a third-person perspective with gameplay focusing on combat and exploration; it features elements similar to those found in other games developed by FromSoftware, such as the Souls series, Bloodborne, and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. Director Hidetaka Miyazaki explained that players start with a linear opening but eventually progress to freely explore the Lands Between, including its six main areas, as well as castles, fortresses, and catacombs scattered throughout the open world map. These main areas are interconnected through a central hub that players can access later in the game’s progression—similar to Firelink Shrine from Dark Souls—and are explorable using the character’s mount as the main mode of transport, although a fast travel system is an available option. Throughout the game, players encounter non-player characters (NPCs) and enemies alike, including the demigods who rule each main area and serves as the game’s main bosses.[1][4][5]

Combat in Elden Ring relies heavily on character-building elements found in previous Souls games and related intellectual properties, such as calculated and close-ranged melee-based combat with the use of skills, magic abilities, as well as blocking and dodging mechanics. Elden Ring introduces mounted combat and a stealth system, the latter being a core gameplay element from Sekiro; these features are expected to encourage players in strategizing their combat approach with each unique enemy they encounter. The game makes use of a player character stamina bar after being absent from Sekiro, although its overall influence over combat was reduced compared to previous FromSoftware games that utilized it. Unlike in Sekiro, resurrection mechanics after in-game death are not available; however, some elements were added to ensure players’ progression within the game.[1][6]

Miyazaki stated that the customization in Elden Ring would be richer, as players are able to discover different skills through their exploration of the map instead of unlocking skill trees as in Sekiro and differing from the pre-fixed weapon skills of FromSoftware’s previous games. These skills are interchangeable with a large variety of weapons which, alongside equipment, magic abilities, and items players can craft using materials found within the world, can be used to customize the player character.[4][6] The game also features summoning mechanics, where players can summon a large variety of collectible spirits hidden throughout the game’s world map, including previously defeated enemies, as allies to assist them in battle. Similar to the Souls series, the game’s multiplayer allows other players to be summoned for cooperative play.[4][7]

  1. It looks a great game for the fans of the fantasy rpg open world. Have that said, it's not my cup of tea, too much fantasy for my liking. I can't wait for a quality open world game which is grounded, with rich narrative and I won't have to fight zombies or monsters. Why it's so hard to develop such a game?

  2. It really is such a fun game in this era and it is very incredible to beat a boss. However for me personally it’s very very difficult and I just need a break every now and then otherwise I’m going to hate it lol

  3. Something I also really do like about this game is that everything is very fresh, there aren’t many enemies that are copy and pasted. Every single enemy and npc is unique and if they do copy a unit it’s not technically a copy and instead it’s just a variant which is super refreshing

  4. I'm just not sure if my mundane working life will allow me to play or stream this game right now.

I still haven't gotten around to streaming Mass Effect trilogy for the first time nor finished my playthrough of Lake.

I still remember what it was like playing AC Origins and RDR2 for the first time… Dusk till Dawn.

  5. This game is addictive af, I also can play for an aggregious amount of time but I'd still put it below DS1, DS3, BB, and Sekiro. I may be unable to put it down but that doesn't make it the best, the gameplay loop just never feels concluded.

For all the amazing aspects of the game and being the most refined Dark Souls (specifically) combat, there's just more busy work and lack of intentional pacing than the rest of Fromsoft's greats.

It never reaches the highs the other games do and though it's open world, it feels much less of a unique and revolutionary game changer like BB or Sekiro were to the Fromsoft format. In a way it feels like a Dark Souls MMO.

The open world is cool but it does make everything feel less specifically intended and crafted, & you're often either over leveled or underleverd for an area. I'm often getting quickly ganked by enemies or bosses or beating them in one or a couple of tries.

My best moments so far are coming across a boss in the open world, and purposely fighting them at a lower level, to create that Fromsoft experience I love of overcoming a challenge.

And while the world style feels reminiscent of Breath of the Wild, it pales in comparison with little variety in gameplay when you explore, just different enemies and visual environments.

I'd honestly have preferred a DS4 or BB 2 or Sekiro 2 over this tbh. Open world is cool but I haven't really found any reason why this is an improvement to a the semi linear design of the other games; I've mostly found it amusing at some points, and frustrating at others.

Still, game of the year for me no doubt. Even a bad Fromsoft game (like DS2, which I do enjoy) is still miles ahead of most AAA studios. So this being great, but not a masterpiece imo, makes it a joy to play.

It's the first AAA in awhile that I felt worthy of the price and genuinely want to finish while living up to expectations (I didn't expect it to be a 10/10, more like 8/10).

And I think that's part of the appeal. Some of it not for the game itself but like in the video "it's game". It is exactly what it was trying to be and not another of every other game being released. And that's sad how desperate we are for a game that isn't trying to trick us.

  6. Witcher 3 (first playthrough) was one of the most immersive, mind blowing gaming experiences I ever had, and one of my top 5 (earlier top 3) games of all time. I loved just how BIG and detailed the world was. From White Orchard to Oxenfurt, Novigrad, southern Velen, Skellige and then Toussaint!

But replaying it, and going through that much (well-written) dialogue really demotivates me from doing it over and over.

Elden Ring, however, has an equally mind blowing scope and (aalmost) detail in its world while having:
    -the level design of DS1
-location variety of DS2 (even more)
-boss quantity of DS2 (even more)
-great atmosphere like BB (at times)
    -multiple-phase super bosses of DS3
-leveling at bonfires (no forced loading screen to return to ‘Firekeeper’)
-allowing us to go ANYWHERE after the tutorial
-the usual ‘see that castle, mountain, lake, arch tree etc. in the distance? You CAN go there sometime!

33 hours in, and I think I’ve lnly done 15% of the game. Thank you, FromSoft!! Instant top 5, if not 3, if not favourite game of all time. It’s like the DS4 I always dreamed of, and even more!

  7. Once this game worms it's way inside your brain you become hopelessly addicted. The setting is just incredible. The Lands Between are like a bizarre fever dream but still somehow feel like they actually exist.

  8. That's the game i love There's no cutscene no big and long boring introduce These type of games they just taught you the basic gameplay and that's it that's literally it The whole rest contents of game is your choice you control the game you can play the game in your order not developers Even souls games are so hard sometimes so frustration But i think only because the most modern games are so dumb modern games they treat players like a 10 years old kid like oh son press this button then you can beat that guy oh kid just press ok? no more questions what do think uh? thought you can combine two things together and create new thing that we don't even consider of? hell no we say where you can go how do you do You want real challenge? of course no Don't get me wrong i love modern games but nowadays these modern games are the same and no challenge yeah They gave you the difficulty but most of them are just enemies can take damage to you more and their health bars are more than normal difficulty But elden ring and all the other souls are different you can't choose the difficulty cuz there's no such thing souls aren't hard They're simply just not like the modern games treat you like baby instead they treat you as a player
