Today we’re talking about the community reception of Elden Ring and even though I’m having a blast with it, that’s definitely not the case for everyone.

I've had stuttering on just about every modern title, depending on the settings for my pc. Things that seem to have helped?
Making sure than many troublesome apps, like steam and chrome, open up with below normal or low cpu priority,
Setting the games I play to above normal or high cpu priority. I had to do this with the registry editor for Elden Ring, due to ez anticheat.
Going through task manager to find out every single app that's using gpu acceleration and changing the power profile, in nvidia control panel to prefer maximum performance.
Turning off any additional anti virus apps, beyond windows defender.
These things together seem to have helped me for a number of things.
Also, as far as I can tell, certain nvme drives will eat into your pcie throughput, and loading a lot of data from it can cause slight burps and hiccups for the gpu.
This game look so boring I cant believe ppl are actualy wasting there time on this
It's just bitching about Performance Issues and reviewbombing a game that, in my opinion, is the dark souls 2 and 3 we should have gotten. I haven't enjoyed a FROM game like this since I played Demons and DkS back to back.
I dont think u need extremely high end gpu to run it well, even on max settings.
Im on a 1070ti and max settings it ran at like 40+fps 1440p. Turned down a bunch of performance hitting settings, im able to get full 60fps for 99% of the time outside of the directx12 shader compilation and zone load frame dips.
To be, the whole series miyazaki made is all centered around exploration, finding out new things, and overcoming challenges.
Thats the soul if the series, something that is very rare in games these days.
I would love to play this game myself, because it looks so damn good.
But I refuse to buy it until the PC version's problems have been dealt with, because from the look of it From Software treated the PC version like an afterthought.
I think the issue others were talking about with lack of direction is that a souls game is built different. When exploring in other games you do face some punishment for going off the beaten path, but it's a heavier punishment in Elden. So if you are taking a great risk going where you are not supposed to be at then players would prefer going the safer route. The safer route isn't clear and thus they will hit that "not supposed to be here yet" wall more frequently in an open world then a linear world.
I just wouldn’t release the game on PC. If they can’t be responsible they shouldn’t have the opportunity to play. 🤷🏽♂️
Too many gamers have become pussies who want their hand held 24/7. Exploration and discovery is the best part of any game.
Playing on PS5 myself. The game is as much a 10 as any other in my book. It's a true masterpiece.
Ruri, I love you for your honesty. Even if I don't usually agree with everything you say, I know you mean it and i respect your opinions. That said, I agree with every single thing you said in this 30 minute video. Specific to PS5 performance, one of my concerns before release was pop in. And, sure enough, it's pretty bad. Spawning at a bonfire and then watching the world generate around you is unfortunate. This is the kind of thing I feel a delay would have helped immensely. The load times on PS5 are amazingly short for a game if this size. Maybe increasing the load times would help, I don't know.
Also, the frame drops on ps5 you mentioned are noticeable. They seem to be minor and, oddly, not when there's a lot going on but in the open world.
I will say that I've had zero crashes. I've taken the week off to play the hell out of this game and have about 40 hours in already. Zero crashes, freezes or game breaking glitches of any kind.
Game pacing and direction has been PERFECT for me. I have a notebook. I'm taking notes and uncovering secrets, pinning things on the map to revisit and exploring this beautiful fantasy world the same way I've done in RPG's since the original Final Fantasy on NES. Sure, this may not be for some people but, like you said, it's not that checklist kind of game. Sometimes I can appreciate the calming effect of checking off your to do list in those games but there's an excitement to uncovering secrets on your own that is really unparalleled.
Wow, so excited about this game. Can't believe I wrote all this but wanted to thank you for sharing your thoughts in a completely spoiler free way. The game is to be savored. There will be plenty of time over the next few months and years to uncover all of its secrets.
I'm on a 1060 with a decade-old processor and the game runs fine on high settings. The problem is with new graphics cards being made poorly (probably to shill to blockchain mining operations). I see this problem reported all the time with new games, it's ALWAYS from people with super high-end cards, particularly 3080s, while lower-end cards work fine.
I started the game on ps5. The inconsistent frame rate was giving me a headache. Something I've never experienced before. So after ten hours I downloaded the ps4 version (on ps5). Much better experience now.
I'm 31 hours in and only decided to fight the first boss recently. I'm not rushing it. This is my first souls game and as you put it I want to savour it at my own pace.
IMO: Great piece of art, a horrible piece of software.
Elden Ring is really amazing.
Only the performance issues and some bugs make it a bit worse.
Worst bugs I encountered till now are boss ki breaking mid fight so they just stand there accepting their death. The two legacy dungeon bosses I fought had some problems too. godwyns transformation animation got canceled by staggering him out of it so he never had a second phase. Rennala spawned the first time without her mechanic so she was invulnerable. Fought her for half an hour searching what I could do to hurt her. Went after that online to see what I did wrong only to find that she was bugged and that she has like a 20% chance to be invulnerable because her mechanic isn't there.
Even with this experience is elden Ring for me personally right now still a 9/10 because the game is really great when it works and I know that they will fix the bugs.
Easy Anti cheat is easy(LOL) to turn off and that's actually one of the ways to fix performance issues. Of course, doing that forces you to play the game in offline mode. Also, I don't think Denuvo/EAC are solely to blame in this case because consoles don't have them(afaik) and still have performance issues.
Bruh just fking play the game and if ur on PC wait for a patch lol, thats what you pay for when u go PC, Million other things devs have to deal with
Agree with rurikhan. Getting a lot of annoying spoiler feeds on YouTube. Those channels getting unsubbed.
Having nvidea overlay was giving me stuttering and frame drops but on my 2060 laptop it doesn’t go below 60 after quitting all overlays on medium settings
I've been playing on ps5 and I haven't noticed a problem with the game. Compared to other games like battlefield that released like dog crap a frame rate drop here and there is nothing. I happy that for once I bought a game that runs great for me and that is a Complete game not oh wait you need to pay 30$ for the next part
I understand the criticism but seriously, this game is basically this generation's Skyrim, and a better one at that.
I personally love that the game gives you bare minimum of guidance. I'm someone if the game tells me I need to go left I always go the opposite direction.i love exploring and not stuck with a cookie cutter path. Going in areas I know I shouldn't be in but still keep exploring that is fun
Not had like any perfotmance problems on pc except 1 single studder, it's been incredible, as for reused assets totally alright with it, they even at times bring up nostalgia and a bit of joy, I favor more content over new animations. Performance issues are definately an issue though and they should be fixed it's a no brainer. As for the whole lack of guidance it's the very thing I love about the game, I literally started the game, said I'll go this way and just explored with what feels like no limits or bounds. The fact it dosen't tell you where to go or what to do is truly what makes it feel so open, it feels unique in the best sense of the word. Also it does have guidance in both the tutorials and from nps and how the sites of grace help guide the way as well. If you don't agree, just give no guidance a try, try to let go of perfectionism and let things unfold trust me it's magical. I don't want to know what's coming up, I want to find out each step of the way. If I could forget Demon Souls and Dark Souls I would just to play them again to witness the magic of those games unfold another time and another and so on.
I don't really reusing assets, especially all of the animations, is at all worth complaining about. I mean, really think about what we're talking about here. Do we really NEED a different animation for a backstab? If a weapon has a spinning slash, do we really NEED to have it look slightly different just so it can feel new? All of the reused animations and assets are things that, really, don't need to be changed. They already got it right, so what… they're just gonna make new stuff for the sake of making it new? idk man, it just doesn't seem worth it. I'm more focused on the actual content, not animations and UI and stuff like that.
As for performance, I feel really lucky I play on Series X. Maybe my potato-brain just can't perceive framerate drops if they're happening, but I haven't had any issues at all. I can definitely tell the difference between 30fps and 60fps, and I can REALLY see the hitching when it occurs on your playthrough, but in my own experience… idk, it has felt totally fine. Not that we shouldn't expect more for ALL platforms, just… selfishly glad I'm not experiencing it myself :p
Although, having said that, I do remember playing Demons Souls, Dark Souls, and Dark Souls 2 back on the PS3 and 360, and the performance on those was NOT good. Again, not saying that we SHOULDN'T expect more, especially after all the success they've had, but from the perspective of a player? I've dealt with worse from these games. Nothing I've seen (crashes aside) has been worse than Blight Town on a 360, so even if it was that bad, I think I'd still be having a good time. Not an excuse, just something I thought was interesting to think about.
Hehe tutorial popups. I have only played the first 3 minutes of witcher 2, because those popups annoyed me like nothing else. Shame, it's probably a great game.
I love the exploration in elden ring so much. In fact I enjoy the Zelda-like aspects a lot more then the soulslike side of things. I haven't enjoyed the couple of sidebosses I've seen at all to be honest. But boy, I found this elevatorride with some great views and my mind was blown.
I have a friend playing this game on a gtx1060 and with 8gigs of ram.
We both see some frame dips but i dont think either of us felt like it effected the gameplay one bit.
I definitely would have preferred the game being delayed more. I only have so much time a week to game, and Horizon Forbidden West and Lost ark already came out this month. For sure I want to play Elden Ring, but i am trying to finish Horizon first before I switch over. Juggling multiple games at the same time kind of sucks when you are limited on time. I have Elden Ring on ps5 and I did start it and played about 2 hours. The performance mode is definitely the way to go but there is definitely occasional hiccups and way noticeable pop in.
PS5 has been pretty smooth for me though. I get some frame drops after I fast travel briefly but that's really it. Sucks that its not working well for some folks though.
I mainly have issues with co-op. I've only had one successful co-op session out of 5. When I get summoned I don't see some or any of the enemies, or I get disconnected from the host. And the lag is pretty bad.
When people complain about things like "reused assets" it tells me they have zero understanding of game development as a discipline. They may know a bit of code but they certainly haven't shipped anything of quality.
In my opinion, developers should be given as much time as they need to make a game as perfect as it can be, before releasing it.
Away from the publishers wishes. Even if it means delaying it another whole year.
We have seen it with many games lately, that they are released unfinished and full of bugs. Or they bash some features in order to finish faster.
I think that a perfect game is one that everyone enjoys, without forums full of complaints and insults. Well…. almost without.
As for the Eldenring. I also think that there is too much information in the game. It made the Souls games great that there was so little information. It's part of the game.
It is even more worth and fun to discover something by yourself, then the game pointing you with your nose into it.
I had no performance issues for first 40ish hours, then suddenly starting getting a ton of hiccups upon player turning or a few others no matter the zone. Google search later problem fixed.
That aside, everything else becomes extremely subjective and nitpicky. The games great and stands above the majority of souls games if not all, it all comes down to personal preference and lots of times nostalgia. Heres my testament to the quality of the game. I hate open world games. Absolutely despise. I always considered dark souls an open world game just with a very small block of legos, but beautifully put together. God of war expanded on it with a controlled approach that managed to get me to see that I could enjoy them if they're more crafted rather than slapped together. This is the combination of that approach to the more traditional idea of open world.
As far as combat, I actually will draw the monster hunter comparison here. I love wirebugs(except for recovery), and what it brought to the fluidity of combat and what it made the game feel like. However, I think an 'evolution of combat' for this company even if done right, would absolutely ruin the game. You change player combat monster combat has to change too or you wind up with monster hunter rise, a fantastic game that now has a negative shade over it because people who actually cart and finish fights in 13 minutes like to shout it's too easy. Not going deeper into that as separate convo, but dark souls works because of the combat the player has. Adding jump attack works perfectly and is about the limit i think itll get to, especially since some of these ashes of war are uh, teetering in that direction.
Good game is good and not perfect, pointing out that a '10' shows the stupidity of numeric reviews. The game is perfect but its far from it. It's a 10 but not perfect.
You're way off on why PC issues exist. They exist because of the anticheat and because From Software makes all their games for console and then badly ports it over to PC.
The new animations outnumber the old by a lot. I don't know how people are still using this as a negative against the game.
