How many From games have to be released before Jeff realizes ambiguity in story / direction is a feature, not a bug!
I’m not sure what more Gertsmann wants the game to do for him when there’s a literal shiny breadcrumb trail of where to go next.
Jeff Jeff Jess Jason Jan Jerome & Rorie
If youre running a video game site and dont have time to play the biggest release of the year.. priority issues? 😀
I’m so fucking ready
I'm really glad I watched this. Super excited for this game's impact on the community, and I hope a lot of people enjoy it this weekend, but I gotta wait until I can do more of a toe dipping, if you will. I will keep my eyes peeled for discounts or used copies and hope to pick this up around half price. Until then, it'll be fun to see more reactions and watch some footage from the game.
Seems like Bloodborne is the game for the ones that really don´t like From Software, Elden Ring is basically a from software game but open world, i´m sorry to say it but from software is just not for everybody, i mean does anyone really could like kingsfield ?., armored core ?., otogi ?, how about that Ps VR game they made ?., that´s the real from software, yes darksouls and especially bloodborne got some "fame" but really from software is keeping being from software and they are really not for everybody, and not just cause "difficult games", they are the masters of rough, criptic and obtuse games, if you are not into that, you are not into from software is really that simple… and i respect them for that
Breath of The Souls
I'm 100% sure I'm the first person to ever think that.
The character Jan's talking to 21 minutes in is 100% voiced by Masie Williams right?
Isn't there a literal light that guides you to the main story, where to go, and big epic trees, etc?
I'm early into the video and they started spoiling too much for me, so I stopped. But feels like they did not even went into to game wanting to know about it, only wanting to game to spell things out for them, and that is not what a souls game does, Elden Ring even less.
Blind leading the blind content.
Jeff is old shiiiiiiiit
I wish I likes From Software games. I've tried every one. I imported Demons Souls from Hong Kong to the UK before it was release in Europe and I keep coming back for every new From game. Sadly they have never clicked with me. I find the obtuseness abrasive. I hate how all the enemies re-populate and I just don't enjoy the boss fights. I will probably try this and I will probably bounce off it after 10 – 20 hours.
I beaten and put in hundreds of hours in every Fromsoft Game, and Bloodbourne is by FAR the MOST OVERRATED game in history.
I just don't get it, smaller than every souls game with less weapons enemies skills and the world and all NPCs felt completely one note.
I love the game but Oh my God it's so not that amazing. Demon's Souls is 1,000,000 time better then Bloodbourne.
Wow, this has some real Dragon Dogma aroma coming off it. That has changed me from 75% would not play, to 101% might see myself playing. They keep using the frame of reference of "Its a Souls game" and I think no matter how many lines you could draw back to From's past games, this might not something to piegion hole that way. I coudl be wrong, but this seems different.
Y’all should watch the whole video before criticizing Jeff. By the end of the video he comes out the other side and excited to get back in.
Jan needs to use the new parry mechanic more. it’s supposedly much easier than any other Souls game
I've only ever played the very first Dark Souls for about 20 minutes and didn't really get what the big whoop was about but I think I'll have to revisit it and see if I can get into it. People seem pretty big on these Souls games
There is a guide?
Oh Gerstmann… 🤣
Elden Ring: 'How am I supposed to know that?! It's frustrating!'
Dying Light 2: 'There's all this dumb, glowy signposting shit everywhere!'
😐
38:51 There ya go, Jeff… now you're getting it!
As someone who likes my souls games, I watch to get their opinions on this out of curiosity, but not for their review as I know they won't like it as much as I do. Always know what a reviewer enjoys when you judge what you plan to take from the review. For instance I want Jeff's opinions on games which mimic older games, or driving games. Or Jan's opinions on JRPG, or Jason's on fighting games or 3rd person action, or Geoff's on refrigerators 😀
perfect video for my Elden ring hype! Can you peep my latest Elden ring content and let me know if it’s trash ??
I just want more rpg's similar to Kingdom Come Deliverance.
Some tips for new Souls players:
First I suggest finding an enemy near a bonfire and spending 15 minutes learning how to fight them. Don’t just swing your sword and hope for the best. Watch their attack patterns and let them kill you. Use your shield and let them hit it – then hit them back. Learn parrying and practice it. Lock on and try to backstab them. Learn exactly what your L1/2 R1/2s do – it’s important. Learn the difference between one & two handing your weapon. Learn to time dodge-rolls and how iframes work.
Only if you learn the basics of combat will these games ‘click’. I strongly suggest you do this right at the start of the game. Don’t try to play like it’s Assassins Creed or you will get nowhere. Don’t run around two handing from the get go – use your shield. Try to fight groups of enemies one by one if you can.
Next step is to learn how character stat scaling and weapon scaling works. It not hard to understand but is crucial. I’m convinced most people who get stuck after a few hours in a Souls game haven’t levelled their character or weapons properly.
I hope this game brings a lot of new players into the Souls game because they’re truly unique and amazing.
If you don’t have the time to play videogames, maybe you’re in the wrong job?
How well does the game play with KB/mouse controls?
We love the serene moment of silence
People watching 5 minutes of the video before posting about Jeff hating videogames. 🙄
Oh Jeff…I really hope FromSoftware makes a Castlevania game one day…
Awee, the poor baby’s. Need their hand held through games.
I'm sure this will be another well made FromSoftware game, but frankly… I'm SO over FromSoftware and its games' influence. This style of combat, the hard-for-hard's-sake difficulty, the obtuse worldbuilding. So many games are trying to copy the formula and be "The Dark Souls of _______". I'm completely burnt out.
There's a lot of similarities to what happened to Arkham's design. Awesome combat system, but after so many games had copied it, I just got burnt out on it. The difference now is that they're not gonna move past it anytime soon because they appeal to a bunch of nerds who constantly wave their dicks around these games.
GRRM and Hidetaka Miyazaki both as far as I know, wrote the entire storyline
GRRM basically worked basic lore bible and setup for the world but the actual story and nitty gritty is entirely FROM Software.
in-game text is being written by Miyazaki.
It's like Jeff gets personally offended when a game makes him think about anything at all or presents any kind of challenge. He acts like instead of being a deliberate choice, that its some kind of baffling mistake when a developer chooses to make the player engage with the world in any kind of meaningful way outside of see map marker>go to map marker>clear copy/paste objective>repeat. Very reminiscent of his Botw takes where he just couldn't understand the appeal of a game that was about exploration instead of having your hand held all the way to the objective. These games don't play like the standard ubisoft open world action game because the devs don't want them to play like the standard ubisoft open world action game. It's not a mistake to make the player think about what they should do next instead of being shown exactly what they should do next.
Jeff Gerstmann saying "What the hell? I had no idea where I was going! There were no big shiny map markers on top of the objectives to tell me exactly where to go and how to get there! I got so confused that I wanted to give up and play something linear." is the highest praise an open world game could possibly receive.
Maybe next time around From soft can add a games journalist difficulty for Jeff that just plays itself while he stares at the screen so he doesn't get frustrated so quickly.
Holy shit does this game run like trash
Triple j in the house
Now to decide if I want Miyazaki to "teach me" that some people think that a videogame akin to transferring 100 marbles from one side of a football field to the other with chopstick is a fulfilling experience, yet again. I wish the art wasn't so good; if it wasn't for the art direction I and many others wouldn't even bother entertaining the idea of paying for the rough-edged mechanical structures and pretentious difficulty curves which lie beneath it's polished exterior.
I think one of the main reasons this game may not click with you guys is that it requires you to be halfway intelligent.
J(2(e2f)+an)
Unpaid marketing teams really do be coming out of the woodwork when you critisize a From game.
Ugh, I hate when people say "games got soft". Such gatekeeping/snobbery bullshit.
This will be my first "Souls" game. Afraid I'm going to hate it after 30 mins, but hopeful I can push through that wall, and this one seems to be the most inviting for newcomers like me. Are God of War, Control, Ghost of Tsushima, and Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order cake walks compared to this? Most of those games have adjustable difficulty though. Out of these, I found Control the most difficult, but also satisfying and rewarding, and one of my favorite games.
Everybody should listen to this podcast before playing Elden Ring, if they have never played a Souls game.
I’m sold on the game
