In regards to seedlings being snapped just above the ground, my experience is this is the slugs doing it. I live in the UK and always have problems with snipped stems. The last thing they ate at ground level was a very prickly and hairy khajari melon stem, hard to believe but a fact.

For the chipmunkinator, we have had great success using the mixed nuts ice cream topping you can get in small bags at the grocery. I've also sprinkled ground cayenne pepper and they seem to hate it, the digging has gone down to almost nothing.
I found they were taking sunflower seeds from the neighbor's bird feeders and burying them everywhere in my garden, because i started finding sunflower sprouts everywhere!
We've also used rat traps baited with the crushed nuts, they don't seem to like peanut butter much. We caught almost 60 of them last year and maybe 20 or so this year so far.
What we did: instead of a 2' chicken wire at the base of the welded wire, we used the 3' chicken wire and left 1' on the ground on the outside perimeter. Then, we out retaining wall blocks around the perimeter. We did this last season and have yet to have even 1 critter in the garden.

I heard from another gardener that if radishes are planted near the stems of cucumbers and squashes, the squash vine borer is repelled. So I tried it this year, and so far it seems to be working. I just sowed them at the same time, and as the radishes grew, I have just just pulled a few at a time, leaving at least a couple for future protection.
Iām furiously battling cucumber beetles. I find more of them on my zucchinis and zapallitos than on my cucumbers. Iām trying to check under the leaves for eggs but thereās a lot I canāt reach. Iāve only seen 2 squash bugs and was able to drop them in some insecticidal soap mixture.
All my first crops have gone to seed but it's ok. Because I need to save seed. Lol
I'm in the same general area as you. My peas never take off until mid to late June. I plant around St Patrick's Day and nothing starts growing until late April. You're finishing your peas and mine have only just hit their stride
Squirrels and chipmunks do not like fenugreek leaves. Just grow around the crops where you are having issues. They will not touch that crop.
Never had a problem with voles eating my onions until this year š

Your garden looks fantastic! I am so far behind with my zone 5b garden this year. We are in a drought and I have to water every day. Just planted out my squash and cucurbits last week. Chipmunk population spiked this year and they have been enjoying my strawberries.
The sparrows this year have been awful.. they have been destroying all my seedlings..peppers too! I put up aluminum pie plates and also quit putting water in the bird bath. It has helped somewhat. Chipmunks can be eliminated with rat traps and peanut butter.
Im in NW Ohio. Probably because of the lack of rain in the last few weeks the deer are doing a job on my sunflowers! They are topping the growth tips and eating most of the new leaves. Im going to have 4 foot sunflower bushes if they can survive the nibbling. Thanks for the info on fall cropping broccoli, as my spring crop totally failed. The critters who think my hard work is their all you can eat buffet are driving me to desperation. I have pretty much turned into Mr MacGregors twin sister! The dryness has caused a shortage of grass clippings to mulch with. Thus an abundance of weeds. On the positive side, I've discovered how delicious weeds like purslane and lambs quarters are.
Love you videos. One thing I'm trying this year as a 50/50 mixture of dextrose (table sugar) and water as a fruit spray. Apparently it gives the birds a stomach ache (but doesn't harm them) and the stay away from your fruit. I'm using it on my cherries just before they ripen. It's so much easier than bird netting. Oh I still have a buttload of stuff to plant, all my summer squash, winter squash, tomatoes, all my melons of different varieties and multiple flowers and all my super hot chilies are just tiny seedling I just started. I have tons of stuff in pots and a raised bed already bit all that stuff I just mentioned is for in the ground. Also my bf surprised me and bought us a couple square-foot gardens yesterday from Costco that we had been talking about for a while. So that's great. It's just more room to grow. I definitely plan on doing succession crops on my potatoes probably twice this year and corn once it twice and then move on to cool season crops. Luckily in socal you can grow year round, almost just about anything. And with the weather finally warming everything's exploding in growth it's so great. But I, too, have a lot of stuff I still need to plant that should have been planted a month or 2 ago. I have some ruby sweet corn I'm very excited to start. I should probably start it this month to have it ready within about a month of the other one. Just a lot of garden stuff to do. But it's fun and the rewards are wonderful.
Animals, OMG! I've got the most hyper active squirrel who keeps digging my garden like crazy! He keep digging up whole plants. I've tried the crushed pepper flakes and he hasn't slowed a bit. I think he's a Southern squirrel and spicy food doesn't bother him. š”š¤¬š”
Letting ducks and chickens work over the garden in early spring before planting really slows pests down.
I spent a lot of the early season this year building a new raised bed garden and filling with soil etc. So, I didn't start a lot of things from seed (just tomatoes and peppers). I ordered a lot of fall crop seeds. I'm in zone 5a, is now a good time to start them indoors? I also have a small 4 shelf greenhouse on my deck.
Any tips for potato bugs. Iāve got an outbreak.
Your discussion on pests and critters was great! Nice to have an honest discussion about the struggles we all deal with, and I agree, it seems like itās a different one every year! We havenāt fenced our garden yet and so far so good but of course a fence is coming. Iām considering putting a 2 foot deep trench around the garden and filling it with rock about the fenceā¦I wonder how deep you would need to go to prevent burrowers from coming inā¦any ideas?! I found out recently that firefly larvae eat slugs! They also eat Japanese beetle larvae. I accidentally created a perfect environment for them by being lazy and not cutting my lawn āoften enoughā and following your advice in the spring cover crop video. I got the spring mix and put it down in April (Iām zone 4b) dug little holes in it when I planted and have been cutting down the cover crop as itās been blooming and just laying it down between my plants. The fireflyās LOVE it. Havenāt seen a single slug and I only found one Japanese beetle larvae when normally I find dozens when I dig.
This is the first year that moles have become a real problem in my CA zone 10a garden, and yes, I too have been working hard to improve the soil and have created a mole buffet of worms and other life. The tunnels are everywhere! I'll have to try the scissors traps. Thanks!
I've had great luck this year keeping critters out of my strawberries using a low fence of 1/4" wire cloth with a ragged edge of cut wires on the upper edge. No one seems to want to climb over those little spikes.

Always a wealth of good information. Iām learning to recognize patterns and prepare for pests particularly the one that lays eggs in my raspberries. Once I see the larvae inside the raspberries Iām too grossed out to eat them . Letās see if the netting works!

Thank you for this video. I have something digging in my raised garden beds. I suspect squirrels since there are a ton of them around here. My neighbor feeds them peanuts every day and that has attracted even more of them. I find the peanuts in all of my raised beds and containerizes. UGH it is so frustrating. I put the long toothpicks in a few of my containers with the pointy end up to try and keep them out. It helped in some places but not at all in others. They are so persistent. If you have any suggestions to keep those buggers out please let me know.

My question is about using the DE. It will eventually wash into the soil, and I wonder what it does to the soil critters that we want/need to make good soil. Anyone have any good info about this? Enjoy the great videos on this channel!
You have an excellent channel. Best mole control I've ever had was dachshunds. They left a furrow deep enough for planting potatoes afterwards. Praying for rain here, no plans for a fall garden because of it.
