As a young man I learned to respect people who CHOSE to live on the streets, by their wits. We called them "street people" and "street freaks" back in the '70s. Back then, "Freaks" was a term of respect because a freak was anyone who was 100% committed to doing Their Thing! They called us, "Jesus Freaks" because we were 100% committed to following Jesus! Following Jesus is why we were on the streets, looking for people in need whom we could help. We had access to resources all over the city, like free meals and clothes or medical attention. During that process we would share the Gospel with them and that message of God's love was never refused. Not necessarily accepted because we're free moral agents. But they respected us like we respected them.
This was of course before all of the mentally ill were released from the hospitals in the '80s, creating and perpetuating a different issue than the one we dealt with in the '70s.
