In this episode:
Just as détente seems to be the ‘new normal’, the West is outraged when the Soviet military moves into Afghanistan. The US immediately offers arms and support to the anti-government rebels. Boxer Muhammad Ali leads an Olympic boycott of the 1980 Moscow Olympics. Fear of global annihilation causes mass ‘No Nukes’ protests.

‘M.A.D. World’ takes a close look at the last time we were threatened by the might of world superpowers: The Cold War. For over forty years the entire world stood on the brink of annihilation, as the horrors of World War II ended and a new kind of global war began when the push of a single button could trigger all-out nuclear war. ‘M.A.D. World’ examines how the world was changed forever by the Cold War. Over eight episodes, remarkable footage from the time shows how the build-up of nuclear arms and the mistrust between West and East instilled terror across the globe. First-hand accounts bring the stories to life as we talk to pilots drilled to drop the bomb, families torn apart by the Iron Curtain, and escaped dissidents who lived in fear of torture and execution.

  2. When the Americans accuse other nations of grossly interfering in the internal affairs of other countries its like the pot calling the kettle black! Talk about hypocrisy!!

  3. Boy' hitting a small island like England with 200 megatons would constitute preposterous overkill. There would be nothing left standing. Everyone would either be dead or wish they were! Of course, the Government would advise people to remain calm and keep a stiff upper lip.

  4. About 25 percent of Soviet servicemen in Afghanistan were Ukrainian, numbering 160,000 of which more than 3,000 died and dozens more went missing.

  5. Russians are a great bunch of people, USA very hypocrites for not going to the 1980 Olympics and Mohammed Ali taking Americans side years after his Vietnamese debacle is hilarious. I wonder what they had on him.
