And well that is the definition of a Pyrrhic victory. You didn’t want to mess with the Spartans. It took all of Greece to take them down, at the height of greeces power, Sparta included. They were not to be trifled with, lightly.

There were at least 5 battles at the site. The last one in April 1941. ANZACs vs the Germans. A successful delaying fight by the Australians and New Zealanders.

A Spartan Mother would tell her own son who's going off to battle. Either return to me victorious or being carried on your shield.
Spartan Soldiers killed in battle were carried back home lying on their shield. The only thing accepted by a Spartan Mother of her husband or son was victory or dying in battle.

You may have noticed the movie was very stylized. While Spartans did exist this movie is actually based off of a comic, which is why it has monsters and the such.
I'm so Old I saw the Original film about this Historic Battle "The 300 Spartans"! A 1962 Epic starring Richard Egan as Leonidas , David Farrar as Xerxes and Sir Ralph Richardson as Themistocles! It's a Good Movie and a bit more realistic. But I do Love '300"!
well yes HRH King Charles had the same trial, but it was a corgi instead of a dire wolf.
Now watch the second movie. Would have loved if they made a third movie showing the final battle.

I just got back from Sparta and Thermopylae. It's interesting to watch this now. There were 300 Spartans, 700 Thespians and up to 900 helots.

It actually WASN'T unique at that time for women to speak up. History shows a LOT of women "speaking up". Public education must be the same world over.

LMAO, he'e like "popcorn" as they killed the elephant, she's like "OMG they killed an elephant". I am disappointed, tho not surprised, that he has never heard of war elephants. Disappointed because they are in video games, not surprised because education.

So the movie is a very exaggerated and stylized true story. The reason is that this movie is based on a comic book that is also exaggerated and stylized. The real battle of Thermopylae was fought with 300 Spartans leading about 7,000 Greek men, while the Persian army may have had as many as 300,000. The Greeks were able to maintain their position for two days, until they were betrayed and killed. There are a few lines that are apparently recorded as having really been said at the battle, such as the "Come and get them" line and the "Fight in the shade" line.
Greece did in fact push back Persia and kick them out of Greece, winning the war, with Sparta being heroes of the story with how they inspired the rest of the country. Though, Athens and other city states did also fight back early on.
Sparta would actually go on to win another very historic war against their fellow Greeks in Athens after this. The Peloponnesian war. Athens and Sparta went to war, with Sparta winning and becoming the head city state of Greece for a while. Leonidas is often honored with the likes of other Greek heroes, such as Theseus, Perseus, Hercules, Jason, Odysseus, and of course Alexander the Great (One of the most famous and successful military generals and Kings to ever live). But along with Alexander the Great, Leonidas was actually real and not myth like the others most likely are (Maybe inspired by real people)
