Wonderful reaction as always, & it's an very interesting topic! With family & friends in the U.S.N. it has interested me for a long time. You should actually watch another video on a landing technique the U.S. Navy trains in which is known as practicing ' Pitching Deck ' exercise's. It will give you a true appreciation for what it takes to land on an U.S. Aircraft Carrier deck safely, & just how many people it takes to help the pilot do so. 👍✈

You can't go through life having never seen "Top Gun". Lucky for you, you don't have to wait 36 years to see the continuing "Top Gun Maverick" like we did. : )
You should watch the Midway movie released in 1976 and the Midway movie released in 2019 .
I remember watching the original Top Gun at the theater in the mid 1980s – multiple times 🙂 I also spent $30 to buy the VHS tape when it became available. It's a good film.
I was in Junior High & everyone wanted to be a Naval Aviator after it. I actually had friends who joined the Navy because of the film.

I had a brother in law who was an aeronautical engineer. He worked on designing flight simulators for the US military. Those things are absolute monsters. If you land too hard in a simulator, it will actually feel like you hit the runway very hard. The simulator can shake, lunge, pitch up / down, etc. to make the pilot feel like they are actually flying a plane.

It's more than just a tailhook. The entire landing gear system and airframe is much more durable, like comparing a monster truck to a saloon car. If you installed a tailhook on a US Air Force plane, it would be totalled upon landing, and the catapult would rip its nose gear off.
We were no slouches at launching planes off of carriers before catapults, either. In WWII, during the Doolittle raid on Tokyo, we managed to launch 16 B-25B bombers from the USS Hornet. These were 53 foot long. 67 foot wide planes, with 5 crew apiece. They took off without any catapults at all.
Ejection seats are in EVERY jet since the 1950s. You can't bail out of a plane at those speeds. You'll get cut in half by your own tail, have your neck broken by the wind, or be pinned into your seat by the Gs.
Obviously by useing language incorrect to US Naval Aviation, whoever wrote the narration has no direct experience in carrier aviation. For instance, the standard procedure for all carrier aircraft is that the approach is made withpower on and speed breaks out. The aircraft is flown onto the deck, the instant the wheels touch the deck full power is applied and at the same time the speed brakes retracted so if you miss a wire you bounce once and are in the air fly immediately contrary to the absolutly false assertion of the narrator that missing a wire (or getting a hook skip) or touching down long by "missing the mark" (sic) would be disastrous.
Only when you feel the aircraft suddenly slowing, and there is no mistaking that instant decleration as the hook catches, do you pull power back to idle. There are many other instances of misinformation. Wrong terms are used through out the video, aircraft carries do not have runways, the have flight decks.
Re 24 hour time in the UK, luckily, most clocks with 24 hr time give you the option between 12/24 hrs
Did 13 years with the F/A-18 was lucky to only have a few close calls but never anything major that could result in loss of aircraft, the carrier and most importantly any of the crew on board.
In an ejection situation the pilot seat is the last to go. In the aircraft I flew it was either just me in the 18E or a WSO sitting back seat in the F. The WSO seat goes first because if the pilot seat went before the rear seat whoever was sitting backseat would get roasted by the ejection seat.
It's a good movie but the only thing really real about it is in the first opening scenes. "Mavrick" would have ended his career and never made it to the school (which is also very different compared to how it shows it to be in the movie) after disobeying a lawful order from a senior officer.
I served on an aircraft carrier for two years and they are amazing pieces of machinery. The crew of the ship is about 3,000 but when the air wing and the Admiral's staff embarks the crew size swells to almost 6,000.
When a plane is coming in for a landing there are 4 cables stretched across the deck. The goal is to snag the number three wire. Each landing is graded and documented to help evaluate the pilots and to give them tips on what they need to do to improve. Each pilot is debriefed after their landing and it is historically a brutally honest assessment. No sugar coating. The plane comes in at high power so if they miss the wires they can just take off the nose of the ship again and come around for another try. This is called a bolter. If a pilot comes in and can't get his tail hook down then they rig what is called the barricade. Think of it as a large tennis net. It is strung across the deck and is connected to the same system that stops the plane when it snags one of the wires. The plane comes in as if a normal landing except the nose hits the barricade and the vertical pieces of the barricade grab the wings and slows the airplane with no damage. If a pilot misses the wire and can't get enough power to take off again or if a pilot has a weak shot off the catapault then thye will eject.
The movie TopGun will give you a perfect idea of how an ejection seat works. Pretty good movie over all. Would love to see a reaction video on that movie.
The carrier turns into the wind, to increase airflow over the wing during launch. Anything for an edge.
Wow im half Navajo and my mom is full blooded Navajo. Her father lived as a medicine man and my summers were on the reservation near the Northern Grand Canyon. Look up Navajo Jumpingskins. Alot of stories still being told. I have been on the rez knowing i was being watched with dogs chasing something and 8 couldn't explain. Very scary
