The Bombing of the USS Cole, 2000 – Animated

As voted for by our Patreons – In 2000, the Arleigh Burke guided-missile destroyer, USS Cole, docks in the Yemeni port of Aden for a routine refuelling stop. Unbeknownst to her captain, a small boat heavily laden with explosives approaches her port side. A new enemy is making himself known.

  1. I don't understand how it can be said that the explosion, " . . . somehow did not breach the hull," and yet we can see that there is a hole in the hull.

  2. Didn't breach the hull and not in danger of sinking??? Not even close to accurate by what we were taught about this attack in the Navy. It was so close to sinking and only saved by the heroic damage control measures onboard. This video is trash and you could have done so much better to honor what happened that day…

  3. I was recently stationed on the Cole. There's a small detail that is usually overlooked about this and the Navy has since implemented proper assessment, warning, and threat zones.
There was a gunner manning an M60 machine gun on the bridge wing and even aimed his weapon at the approaching craft, but was told to not fire at them as there was no apparent threat.

  4. My wife's father was in the galley when the explosion took place, he was the only one in the room who survived. Still has a large scar on his head from when the floor buckled up and launched him into the ceiling, he never talks about it and I really can't say I blame him.

  5. "[…] it is a propaganda victory for Osama bin Laden, who uses the attack to recruit more extremists […]"

Come join out cause! And maybe next time I'll put YOU on a boat to blow yourself up! Yaaaaay!

  6. Should the crew were briefed about the dangerous state because of the terrorist wanting to hit a surface target.. would it have changed anything?

I'm sure this case was studied a lot in mayor staff training.

  7. This makes me sick to my stomach as Aden was where Bin Ladin first attacked 8 years earlier on December 29th 1992 during the Somalia debacle. They sent that ship into Indian territory without any warnings..

  8. Frame 5:50 — "al Qaeda's first targeted strike against the US Military" …not correct at all! Many previous bombing and attacks including the hotels downtown Aden housing US Troops on December 29th 1992 during the Somalia debacle. The Dhahran Airbase barracks got bombed in 97…a Army compound in Riyadh got bombed in 1995..

  9. Similar story as when suicide bombers attacked a building in Beirut, Lebanon- killing a lot of US Marines. The terrorists, driving a car full of explosives, smiled at the american guards who had no magazines in their rifles.
    Same level of incompetence.

  10. The USA thanks Bill Clinton for letting this and other acts of terrorism agains the US go unanswered. GHW Bush inherited an emboldened Al Qaeda from his predecessor and history needs to remember that in judging his Presidency.
