The first week in May I was finally able to get a group of 4 to play Corrupt Bargain. We also had a great time. We took it slow and it lasted 3 hours. We went all the to the next to last tie breaker. And I only lost by one. The only tie breaker we didn’t use was to draw an event card. It was a very tight game. Thanks as always for your videos emails and blogs.
I would love to know the percentage of Alexander's game boxes that have the kids on upside down. Is it a coincidence or is it a problem? Bug or feature? Lol

I went to Buckeye Gamefest this year and was amazed at how easy it was to get into a pickup game. I had to be open to playing what came available. Even though only one of them was something I wanted to play before going there all were good games with good company.
Interesting to hear about the dynamics of boardgame conventions…my only experience has been historical miniatures conventions. The larger conventions, Historicon, Cold Wars and Fall In are held at large hotels with attached convention facilities. Miniatures gamers tend not to be as frenetic as your experience, they may play in two or three games a day, squeezing in trips to the vendors area and flea market, but tend to go out for meals, although most of the venues have in house restaurants and food stations available.
Historicon this July is in downtown Lancaster, with a host of restaurants and taverns within walking distance. There is also a nearby farmers market that has fresh and relatively inexpensive food available for breakfast and lunch…Alexander could get his fruit there. The conventions require the venue to provide water throughout the gaming area, so no one is spending $7 on a bottle of water. All the hotels also have full service bars.
Sounds like WBC is held in the middle of nowhere so you are held captive at the venue for food, etc. The other difference is that the historical conventions only last Thursday through Saturday, Sundays are travel days with just a few days. One thing we have noticed over the last couple of years is that gaming in the evenings has really fallen off, people going out to dinner and if they come back they aren't interested in playing into the wee hours. Big difference from 20 years ago when games would continue until midnight or later.

I’ve been twice. Won my TRC game and Caesar Alesia game, as the Romans.
Being able to drive to the convention is a huge advantage. If you go to GMT West this year, or to Consimworld Expo, I assume you will need to adjust. For WBC, I pack one small bag with 4-5 games including the one I GM, plus some dice and possibly a few rulebooks. I'd love to be able to drive and take more.
For WBC, if the games you want to play are offered as tournaments, no worries about finding opponents – just show up and be ready to play. Many people treat the tournaments as "Scheduled open-gaming" – I know I can show up Tues at 9 and play one or more rounds of 'X' game. Lots of opportunity for 2 player and multi-player. That's one of things I love about WBC, you don't have to spent alot of effort setting up games if you don't want to.

If you are looking for some Shostakovich while playing Traces of War, you can't go past his Eighth Symphony. A disclaimer though: it's not for the musically fainthearted.
Written in mid '43, it's a meditation on the tragedy and horror of the grinding machinery of war. Initially slated for a Stalin Prize, eligibility for this prestigious award was soon withdrawn because it was determined the symphony lacked "sufficient optimism" showing the "glorious Red Army and Soviet people in their struggle against Fascism toward victory". Instead, its bleak tone and grim themes with no let up or triumphal grand ending, rendered it unsuitable for propaganda purposes (unlike his patriotic Seventh 'Leningrad' Symphony). Initially, there was warm and enthusiastic anticipation of this new work. However, this quickly turned rather cold once they realised what he had written. Shostakovich and the symphony received censure from the regime, both in the press and through official art bodies, the VKI (Committee on Artistic Affairs) and Composers' Union. In 1948 it was banned under the Zhdanov decree crackdown, and only rehabilitated after Stalin's death in 1956.
The Third Movement is a cracker – you can almost see/hear/feel the T-34s hammering across the steppe and the Shturmoviks flying over, rockets firing!
