Russia's fighting power is exhausted in Ukraine – here's why | Defence in Depth

Moscow’s Victory Day parade held on May 9 was notable for the lack of military hardware on display.

It’s supposed to remember and respect the Second World War generation, but Putin and Soviet leaders before him have used it as a means of expressing power and prestige.

So it was surprising that the only tank on the parade was an 80-year-old T-34 from the Second World War.

Should we laugh at such a poor display of Russian military might? How powerful is Russia’s armed forces and how can we objectively assess the state of Putin’s army?

  1. Think that picture at 0:05 says it all: a bunch of insignificant fools being overly full of their own egos trying to impress those around them with their "decorations". Decorations all showing eagerness and willingness to kill and harm others. A monkey with a hundred golden medals pinned on its golden jacket is still a monkey.

  2. Great Patriotic War my arse. They bang on about WW2 as if they weren't instrumental in starting it with the Molotov-Ribbentrop connivance in Poland's destruction. The bit from1939-1941 never happened, apparently, -the bit where they did their share of killing Poland and then gave Hitler whatever he wanted for almost two years as he murdered western Europe. Barbarossa couldn't have happened to a nicer bunch of thugs. For over a century they have sought to install a dystopian nightmare in place of our great European free civilisation. Screw them.

  3. No,no,no. No propaganda here! Vietnam? What's Vietnam? Is that where we dropped the Atomic Bomb? WOW, light at the end of the Ukraine tunnel. According to everyone except reality, Ukraine is just a step away from freeing the World. Pity, let's be honest, no one really gives a damn about this Civil War.

  4. Corruption is the root problem. Putin gave a patriotic speach in a $14,000 coat, with a $20,000 watch. But his factories can't spit out a $5,000 truck. I can't conceive of a $14,000 coat.
