Consignment of dead animals imported into Australia, seized by authorities | 7NEWS

Almost 40 tonnes of illegal animal meat, including turtles and donkey, has been intercepted in Sydney west before reaching restaurant tables. But even more alarming is the risk to local agriculture if any of it was contaminated.

It is one of the largest illegal hauls of animal products ever intercepted by Australian authorities. 38 tonnes of animal products were seized, including frogs legs, duck blood and turtle meat.

Seventeen search warrants have been executed since the discovery was detected in a warehouse in western Sydney in February. The imported goods were all headed to the black market for human consumption, but thankfully bio security officials have averted a potential disease outbreak which could cripple the economy.

It’s not known which country these goods are from or exactly how the products got into Australia.

Some of the products are being tested before they’re destroyed. The suspected criminal syndicate behind the haul is facing up to ten years jail. Investigators say if business is behind it they’ll be facing millions of dollars in fines.
