  2. Hey guys.
I was a fan of BSG back when Lorne Green was Adama. The later series, although better looking, and more accurate to the 'lore', was not as captivating to my older self.
I liked the Battlestars so much, that I basically hijacked the idea for a Creative Writer's Group, loosely based on Star Trek (no Kirk, Spock, etc… just the technologies, but not the Next Gen and later).
In that group, my aliens, were a bipedal feline race that was 50 percent larger (on average) than Humans. These aliens, rather than build massive numbers of smaller ships, built fewer, but Massive ships.
I described them as an elongated 'faceted gem' shaped ship, with armored, paired 'bumps' along the trailing edge. These 'bumps' were armored panels covering the upper portions of Warp Nacelles, which were partially embedded into the main hull of the ship. In two rows along the spine of the ship, both ventral and dorsal, were Vertical Launch, Fighter bays. Recovery was in the Aft portion of the ship, between the eight armored nacelles.
Central along the spine of the ship, both dorsal and ventral, were a pair of massive Rail Guns that fired projectiles the size of city buses or larger. Along both sides, and along the edges of the dorsal and ventral sections, were upwards of 200 quad-mounted, 6-barrel, rotary, rail guns for point defense, as well as over 40 Cruiser class Phaser banks.
The ship also mounted over a dozen Torpedo Launchers… 8 to the fore, 4 to the aft, and 6 along each side. The vessel had a crew of 2400, along with a Marine Compliment of 6,000. The ship mounts 12 Impulse Engines, mostly clustered in four groups in the aft quarter on both sides of the vessel. Even with 8 nacelles and 4 MASSIVE warp cores, the ship was NOT 'fast', although it could keep up with most Fleet ships at Warp 7 or so.
    General dimensions: 2,657 m long, 742 m wide, and 228 m tall.
The armor was my own creation. An alloy that almost requires 'printer' tech, or Industrial Replicators. I called this alloy TaC-TiC. Tantalum-Carbide and Titanium-Carbide, in molecule scale, repeating alternating layers. I had a friend with both a physics and chemistry degree work out the covalences of the atomic structure and its strength. It worked out to be around 70 times the strength of the best steels mankind can produce. And, it would have been at least 5 times the strength of 'Tri-Tanium' armor.
There were two designs of the ship… The first one, as above, with 'only' 120 'fighters' assigned to it. The second, sacrificed the largest rail guns for three more longitudinal launching bay strips, and a further 360 fighters added to the original 120.
A third version was postulated before the Writer's Group dissolved, which would have sacrificed ALL the fighters and the largest rail guns, for vertical launch, high impulse drive, missiles. Tipped with either very massive Nuclear, or Anti-Matter warheads.
The only other ships my aliens made were Frigate Class ships that would leave anything 'Fleet' behind as if they were standing still. Highly maneuverable, and armed and armored like a Cruiser. Those ships had massively smaller crew compliments… 48 crew per ship. Half of which, in a pinch, would be 'boarding parties'.
Another aspect of my aliens was that people were valuable… so they developed Powered Armor that made each soldier into a walking tank, that could fire a pair of Phasers, micro missiles, and a couple of arm mounted rotary miniguns for anti-infantry use.
The writer's group lasted for over 10 years, before 'life' got in the way of creative writing. Ah, well.

  3. The Cylons didn't very nearly break Galactica's firewalls…they DID break her firewalls. Its a blink and you'll miss it moment, but when Gaeta (I think) was racing to disconnect Galactica from the network they were using, you see him bend down to pull the plug with the last firewall still intact on his display screen. When he pulls the plug and pops his head back up though, his screen in the background was showing that he was too late and the last firewall was down a split second before they had disconnected.

  4. I have an alternative theory for the 2 'non functional engines'.

Galactica at the time of the show was becoming a museum, it had been stripped down from what it once was, lots of it's armour had been removed and some of its gun placements, even so far that it only had one functional flight pod, even after the second cylon war , Galactica never reopened the second flight pod, it couldn't as it had the mechanism removed, so it's possible that the two engines had their parts removed knowing for its museum function it would work fine with 4 engines.

  5. Forehead canon: the two central auxiliary engines constantly run at reduced power, and the exhaust gases are ported to reaction control thrusters, to provide maneuvering. In the event of engine troubles, one or both can be opened up, restoring reduced thrust during battle, or allowing other engines to be taken offline for regular maintenance without having to drydock her.
