Beloved actor Dick Van Dyke is a lucky man. The 97-year-old legend narrowly escaped serious injuries as he was driving on a rain-soaked California highway. Police say he crashed his 2018 Lexus into a Malibu gate. Paramedics treated him for a bloody mouth and nose at the scene but did not transport him to a hospital. There was some concern that he may have suffered a mild concussion. His latest accident brings into focus the question of elderly drivers behind the wheel.

My brother is a great chauffeur. I stopped driving a while ago. I have a chauffeur. Not my brother. I'm 71. I have zero problem with letting him drive. Grow up people.
he should not be driving
Might be? Definitely
Yes, but if we take away their licenses, we need to offer alternatives. We can't just take away grandma's car and expect her to walk or ride a bike everywhere. Public transportation, free food delivery, elderly home care services, etc., these need to be offered more and at an affordable price.
He looks likes he's already dead. Sad watching your childhood actors slowly decay and disappear.
For most seniors, driving is their last vestige of independence. Nobody wants to give that up.
Poor dick, I hope dick can recover soon, he's definitely unlucky
SOME seniors shouldn't drive, but more young people have accidents than seniors do. Teens ages 16-19 have more accidents than seniors in the US. This piece of "journalism," lol left that part out, of course, because it would put the seniors driving into proper context and wouldn't be all that exciting. It is bias towards seniors.
I am not a senior myself, but I know many seniors who have never been in an accident or even had a driving ticket after driving for more than 50 years.
The more you know. Do a better job Inside Edition.
I didn't know he was still alive! I honestly thought he died several years ago.
He's wealthy enough to afford a driver. However, it's tough for elderly people that don't have any family or friends to rely on. They still have things they need to do. Go to the grocery store, doctor appointments, etc. On a fixed income Uber isn't really an option and if their city or town doesn't have reliable public transportation they don't have many options. I'm not advocating for senior citizens driving more I'm simply pointing out the difficulty they face when it comes to giving up driving. It's easy for us to say "they shouldn't drive," but what do they do when they don't drive but have no one to drive for them or can't afford it?
God bless his heart ๐๐ฟ๐ฏ๐๐ฟ
When I was a kid my great grandmother was still alive, she was such a bad driver, it's a miracle she never caused a 42 car pile up
After 75 no one should drive
Is he too old to drive, yes!!!
How was this full of disturbing images? This was beyond mundane.
My dad is 72 and he still works as an electrician, digging his own trenches and everything. Idk why lumping drivers in their 70's in with 90-something year old drivers is appropriate. That's a 20 year age gap. 70-something is fine to drive given that they can see just fine. I see young people get into accidents more often than those in their 70s.
Who hasn't had the balls to take his keys away? My parents were not very happy when we removed the keys, but he has dementia, so she would tell him step by step directions, despite the fact she was legally blind and can't hear. It was a like having Helen Keller as the GPS…
Yeah I think in a certain age driver's license should be taken away. For other people's safety.
The simple fact is they've passed their test like anyone else and should be judged on merit.
The elderly man I dealt with in the health industry was a "former test driver for all the formula 1 teams at one time or another" he could drive better than me today
Yeah wet weather not being almost a 100?
Just stop driving. Serious. I'm too old for many things, like platform shoes. Just accept it
Only if dementia is diagnosed….
Heโs 97 years old, escaped 2 near-death experiences in his 90โs, and probably more in his younger days. When itโs not your time, itโs not your time
why is he still driving? I think nobody should drive once they hit 80. I have never seen anyone that age that had enough reflexes to be a safe driver today. Cars go too fast and have too many buttons and options. It's true that 18-24 yo have the highest death rate from accidents, but at 80 you should at least be smart enough to know its time to stop driving!!
I literally have driving anxiety & cannot fathom why elderly people insist on continuing to drive. I can't wait for the day when I won't have to anymore!
I definitely saw the headline & was worried Dick had left us. I am not ready to say goodbye ๐ญ
He has a weird first name and controversially offensive last name..
