One of the worst long lasting affects of the War was an increase in sectarian hatred between Sunnis and Shias. Iraqi writer Ali Al Wardi (ุนูู ุงููุฑุฏู) writes:
"Sectarianism is not a religion, rather it is a kind of tribal affiliation to a certain sect or person, and when a sectarian individual becomes fanatic for his sect, he does not care about the moral or spiritual principles in the sect. Because of his loyalty to his group and hostility to others, he looks at his sect as the Bedouin looks at his tribe"
