A couple of days after the announcement from the Duke and Duchess of Sussex that their children Archie and Lilibet would be known as prince and princess, Buckingham Palace announced that Prince Edward would be promoted to the Duke of Edinburgh. The King ‘didn’t intend’ to give the title to his brother as part of his wider plans to ‘slim down the monarchy’, Eden tells our royal talkshow Palace Confidential. ‘But then, when Harry and Meghan started using the Prince and Princess titles for their children, it became clear this wasn’t going to happen and then King Charles could hardly justify not giving Prince Edward the title he’d been promised by their parents,’ he says. ‘It was a big deal and I really think that was behind it.’ By insisting that the Edinburgh title revert to the Crown when Edward dies, however, the King has shown that he has an ace up his sleeve when it comes to his son’s actions. ‘I have heard it said that part of the reason is that the King wants to stop Archie inheriting that title the Duke of Sussex. So this might be part of that, so he has now set that precedent,’ adds Eden. ‘The problem is, that he’d have to do it with all the royal dukes so he really wouldn’t want to do that to the very well respected Dukes of Gloucester and Kent.’

King C is a 70+ senior parent trying to appease a child going through his terrible twos.
Concern about the Gloucesters and Kents is understandable were dukedoms to be no longer hereditary but were they to revert to the Crown, the same as the dukedom of Edinburgh, would the King not be able to confer the titles to Gloucester's and Kent's eldest sons anyway, should he so wish? Thus the dukedom of Sussex would also not be hereditary so there would be no risk of an American becoming Duke of Sussex.
I don't understand the fuss. Sussex is not a hereditary dukedom, so it reverts to the Crown.
Charles is a miserly old man who should not be king.
Titles are awarded to commoners. There is no reason to strip his cousins of their titles.

It makes perfect sense for the Sussex title to revert to the crown. Why do American children need British Royal titles? It also makes perfect sense for the other dukedoms to stay as they are and for Edinburgh to revert back as it is a title associated with the capital of Scotland. I see no difficulty in this, they do not all need to be treated the same.

I think the idea of slimming down the monarchy is an excellent idea, and giving the title that the Queen wanted given to Edward, but denying it being a hereditary title was a good thing to do. The world is changing and young people now will see nothing wrong in merchandising their titles – which would be very bad for the monarchy. Many people support KC3 slimming down and he is not alone – look at the entitled wails of fury from Denmark when all the princes were given other titles instead . Too much entitlement in a world where entitlement is wrong for what is an accident of birth. Let these people have jobs, live a free and ordinary life – they will be the better people for it. Someone expressed horror that an elderly supporter to the crown such as the Duke of Gloucester would now be told his title would not be hereditary ,- Charles has said for many years he would be slimming down the monarchy, this is a new age. Brief pain in the great scheme of things but the monarchy will be in a strong position to face future challenges because of Charles actions.

Hey Edward gave up his throne for the woman he loved, was given a created title as Duke and Duchess of Windsor, lived basically in exile in France( never understood how they kept their lifestyle) but the title died with then. So Harry's title can die with him also.
