My first introduction to Decimation was actually in the World War Z novel, where Russian soldiers were punished with it. It was used to instill guilt in the soldiers that lived, and make them feel like they were partially responsible for the deaths (and also to keep them from questioning further orders), it was fairly effective from what I recall

After reading so much of history and war, I am gobsmacked at the news of decimation thru the years. So warriors feared killing by enemies AS WELL AS THEIR OWN COLLEAGUES. In the story of the War of the Rats – defense of Stalingrad, I was shocked to the core at what Stalin did to his own men,by killing HIS BEST MEN. We think Hitler was evil, one has no idea about treatment of males in armies. Unimaginable.

OK let's be clear about something. Decimation does mean the typical "absolute destruction". However, decimation in a very specific historical context means something else. Please don't try to be clever and show off your knowledge during regular speech by correcting people about decimation. Only thing you show off is how pedantic you are. There is a time and place for pedantry but it is not in colloquial speech.
