M1 Ultra vs 12900K RTX 3090 PC: Did Apple LIE about Mac Studio?

Apple compared their Mac Studio to the VERY BEST from Intel and Nvidia, namely the i9-12900K Alder Lake CPU and the RTX 3090 GPU, but do those claims ACTUALLY hold up?!

In this video, we ran a bunch of cross-platform benchmarks and real-world tests to see if Apple’s Mac Studio can actually compete with a Custom PC.

We compare things like the CPU performance, graphics performance, code compiling, 3D rendering, photo editing, video editing in apps like Davinci Resolve 17 and much more!

  2. Great Video. I wonder how DR 18 will do on the Mac Studio. I understand that BM has optimized their software so it runs great on the Mac which is good news. Of course many content creators are gamers as well, so there's that. However for video editing the Studio is a Beast. Thanks.

  3. The ProRes comparisons are kind of cap because no one is buying these computers to sit down and make proxies to achieve faster render times. I don’t know any camera that actually shoots prores except the iPhone.. so technically speaking you’d have to make proxies to be able to achieve those render times in the first place. And depending on the amount of clips you would be transcoding would kind of defeat the purpose of making the proxies in the first place all being said that the footage that was shot is 4K 4:2:2 10 Bit and lower since the tests show that the playback speeds on both machines are perfect.. Dont get me wrong I don’t hate Max or Apple, I just think the test is kind of cap when using a codec that was specifically designed for one companies product that you can’t even get without transcoding the media to begin with.. 😅

  4. I don't understand why I must be interested in these two outliers. If you can pitch the Mac M1 Studio to a comparably priced PC, it would be of help to us in deciding what to buy.

Otherwise, this is just an academic question and of not much use to us, unless we just want to know if Apple using clever Marketing: Heads up, it does and not everything it says about performance of its products is true and must be taken with a pitch of salt.

  5. The video just proves how good the median engines are in the m1 ultra compared to the nvdia gpu
I am pretty sure the 3090 is atleast or close to twice the performance when it comes to raw compute but m1 ultra with those media engines is a beast

  6. You hit the nail on the head when you mentioned the crazy lower power usage of the studio.

In the UK right now electricity prices are expensive, almost tripling in cost. The studio would easily save me a huge amount of money especially if I’m doing a lot of intensive work

I think sometimes people forget about power consumption as if it doesn’t make a difference, but it’s certainly something I am way more conscious of now that electricity is 35p / kWh!

  7. Maybe Apple was saying it due to ANE.
In my experiments, ML inference is 7.5x faster on 16c ANE than 8c GPU on my M1 MBA.
As M1 Ultra has 32c ANE, then its speed is 15x than 8c GPU, theoretically.

Given all this, at 4:44 video mark, that GeekBench score would be 102672 x 15 = 1540080 which is 6.6x faster than RTX 3090 on CUDA.
But, again, ANE cannot be used for training ML model as it has FP16 support only. (But FP16 ANE can be supported for some ML layers like the ones present in Apple's ML Compute framework) It's extremely good for ML inference tho.

  8. Being someone who does video editing, gets into the design world and does 3D Design its a really hard choice… I really like macOS and FCP etc. but these Blender Render Times on the PC are just insane. But also the PC consumes so much more Power than the MacStudio so im not quite sure what to get… plus I can't build a pc myself so I would need to buy a preconfigured or let someone build it which adds extra money….

  9. If you're not a gamer, 100% of the time I would go Mac. I could give up my 3' tall 90lb Origin PC that came in a wooden crate bigger than Indiana Jones movies. The Ultra is simply amazing. The $600 Mac Mini M2 is mind-blowing. Of course, light up Cyberpunk 2077 on a 43" 4K G-Sync at 144hz, and size is no longer relevant.
