China would ‘fall over themselves’ for a proper relationship with Australia

Former prime minister Paul Keating says China would “fall over themselves” having a proper relationship with Australia, criticising Labor for prioritising defence over diplomacy.

Mr Keating said one of the principal problems of this deal is how defence has “overtaken foreign policy” and as a consequence, Australia is “not using diplomacy”.

  1. 100% as usual… China has never invaded another sovereign country and has historically stuck to itself… Hence **The Great Wall of China.** The west Americanism feels threatened by it's economic growth and has dragged Australia into it's political position… starting with Trump and Morrison… fueled by Murdoch with COVID smear and tariff war.

  2. There is just this little thing about them being a totalitarian dictatorship that endlessly threatens its neighbor Taiwan with invasion. Just a little thing I know, but relevant.

  3. How “Deeply pathetic” is it to see Labor destroy the economy time and time again. China is Big Government personified, Labor’s ambition is to be Big Government. Working closer with China will bring Australians closer to being economically like Laos. Belt and road anyone?

  4. What is it with bringing on these washed up and disliked PM's, hey? Are they the only ones you can find to agree with your narrative that you want to present, or the only ones without a job and free to gossip and give their 2 cents worth on something they contributed to making a mess off. Keating wasn't a great man, we all remember the recession we had to have, and also how he ousted Bob because Bob promised to give him leadership but he wasn't relinquishing it, so he forced the issue, moved on his own leader within his own party, so he could become leader, have all the power. And all UNION BOYS, watch out, they learned how to play people in the unions, long before they became PM and played the people of Australia.

  5. We used to be a lucky country, now we are the dumbed down idiots of Asia and I don’t go much on Keating , on this he’s spot on. We should be the super power of our region but not with middling arts grads and conniving ministerial minders promoted above their capacity running this country.
    Stupid us😢

  6. I'm am sick of Keating's lies, wondering how much money has invested in China. He is wrong about CCP not being a threat. CCP are trying to do what Japan did with Australia during WW2 America saved us with our own troops. CCP are using grey warfare tactics. That is why they hate AUKUS and submarines

  7. The Chinese could build the submarines for us in a fraction of the time at a fraction of the cost.
We should use our abundant uranium to build our own nuclear power stations and nuclear weapons to defend ourselves and adopt a neutral foreign policy. The AUKUS deal is a colossal waste of taxpayers money. The timeline is also ridiculously long.

  8. So what we going to do just let them invade us lying down take it China would love have Australia iron ore and coal & our farming lands under there control so wouldn’t have to payout many trillions dollars for it and become there slaves under communism rule that’s why have to invest in better defence systems like having nuclear subs so at least they know aren’t going be easy push over

  9. I miss politicians that can think critically, even if I don't agree with everything they say. Keating sounds like a prime minister, something other people could learn from. Australia is so dumb these days , I'm sorry

  10. Except that they haven't been falling over themselves to have a proper realationship, just the opposite. Ensuring that they broke ties, broke deals, their words, refusal to even pick up or return a call, all in order to try to punish Aus economically for not kow towing to their insecure wants. Those deeds are not the actions of a friend but an angry tyrant not getting their own way.

  11. It’s not defence it’s war mongering and has been for a long time.I love Keating but let’s not pretend he hasn’t made mistakes.Keating was front row centre pushing jobs off shore.which a child could see wasn’t going to play out well and it hasn’t.so now globalisation has ended and now our pathetic politicians think that hundreds of years of knowledge on how to make things will just appear in the dead of nite like a drunk senator.people these politicians are fools and corrupt.

  12. Paul Keating – The delusion is strong with this one. China does not need Australia, rather Paul needs China more.
China is a manufacturing powerhouse and has the ability to produce everything from toys to weapons in huge numbers and Australia on its own has NO defence against them. (arguably no one single country does either)
Australia has regional power as far as military might is concerned. – It is simply no match for China. The USA being involved levels the field as they are both (USA and China) regarded as super powers, but even then extra strength is needed in the form of the UK's global reach (regarded as the only global power), coupled with the might of Canada may be the only way the scales are tipped in our favour.
Paul also needs to stop bashing the UK because joining the EU was not a popular move with the people, and if he has any knowledge of history he will realise that almost from day one a huge swath of British people have wanted out of the EU which they got by popular vote. (even Maggie Thatcher's last speech pointed to the UK breaking away form the EU)
By most measures, the UK is set to overtake Germany in GDP to become the 4th largest Economy and the loss of the UK from the EU has not been the catastrophe the world was chuntering about. But it has hurt the EU.
Just like the UK, Australia has had to learn to rely on itself and to realise that aligning ones self with cultures and countries that do not share common values is asking for trouble in the near future. Aligning with China is like asking a lion not to bite when you have your head in its mouth.
Maybe not militarily initially, but they will own your economy if they are invited through the door.
I like most people have no direct 'beef' with the people of China, but you have to ask yourself, if the roles were reversed and you were invited through the front door to China, would you not try and gain an advantage either economically or militarily? – I think we all know the answer to that one.

  13. Paul Keating is full of shit!
Should Australia just ignore the Uyghur genocide, their military buildup, their South China Sea man-made islands, their claims on Taiwan, the Wuhan coverup or their Wolf Warrior bellicose and belligerent foreign policy, all in the name of a cosy trading relationship. Paul Keating is a MUPPET and should be given his afternoon pudding and made to take a nap.
We've had submarines for decades and the current Collins Class will need replacement eventually. Why not get the apex predator of the seas, with the latest technology that will allow Australia the best strategic leverage to protect us against an ever-expansionist CCP.

  14. Supplying China with anything is akin to bowing to your master. They want dominance over everyone around them. They are trying to make territorial claims in Russia, India, and just about every other country in the area. Go ahead and seal your fate.
