Alright so Total Recall was THE go-to 90’s sci-fi action movie from my childhood. As someone who grew up with only 4 channels, well we got a 5th in like 1997, but that’s neither here nor there. Catching this for the first time while staying at my grandparents was a treat. Sure I had watched Arnie in Predator and Terminator 2 by this time, but after becoming a HUGE star wars fan when the original trilogy had it’s re-release, Total Recall felt like Star Wars meets the more adult action movies from Schwarzenegger. And there was a topless 3 tittied woman, so 10 year old Jared, you know, liked this one.
But it was always one I never fully understood, like the more I thought about the series of events and ending, the more it confused me. Was Quaid real? Was Hauser real? Did Benny actually have 5 kids and just dodged child support? Either way, we’re diving into this 90’s gem, because rewatching it really allowed me to pick up on all of the foreshadowing just thrown in your face, but also the technical behind the scenes side of things was honestly groundbreaking for the time. So join me, grab a space suit and ** Get your ass to mars**
Kicking things off, the opening scene on the red surface of Mars captures that wonder of an epic sci-fi adventure, and the sheer horror of space once Quaid’s mask breaks on the rock. Idk about you, but this scared the bejesus outta me as a kid. Sure, we now know this isn’t how the vacuum of space actually works, but man the practical effects of Quaid’s eyes and tongue swelling were so well done.

I can't believe you caught on to Benny being a plant, but not Briefcase Man. It was no coincidence he was there. Cohagen needed Quaid to get to Mars for his scheme to work.
There are four distinct possibilities fir what's going on:
1. Everything's real,
2. Everything is a memory implant, exactly as advertised,
3. Something went wrong at Rekall, and Quaid is suffering brain damage, or
4. Everything is real until Cohagen tries to get Howser back, and Quaid's brain goes south at that point.
I think quaid was really a nice person and thst machine just unlocked it

I've found a new favourite movie channel, I'm subbed and I'm going balls deep.
I'll be honest, I love the movie and don't think it's a dream. Never really thought about it. You kept saying that the Dr/Tech support character who went into take him out of the of the dream failed when Arnie spit out the pill, but if he's was just a hologram/not real, why would he be sweating if when the 🔫 was put to his head unless he truly felt his life was in danger?

All of this, all these details mentioned, absolutely implies that this is all a dream. BUT! There are two major things in one & the same scene that totally contradicts the possibility that all of this is just an implanted dream. First, at Rekall, Quaid wakes up suddenly as Hauser & yells at everyone & tries to break free of the chair. They manage to put him to sleep again. And this could have been part of the implanted dream as well if not for ONE very specific line mentioned shortly right after in the same scene. McClaine tells Dr Lull that Quaid is just acting out the ego trip & that is why this happened. And Lull's response is; "I'm afraid that is NOT possible! Because we have NOT implanted it yet!"
So, either her response that the implanted dream not yet being implanted is all part of the ego trip & dream OR this is US, not Quiad, seeing the actual reality going on! And Quaid is in fact NOT dreaming anything & all of this is in fact happening. He is originally Hauser in collaboration with Cohagen. Another tiny thing much later also supports that all of that is happening is in fact real is that Quaid himself tells Cohagen that all that has happened is just too perfect, which it absolutely is. But Cohagen explains this that all of this was perfectly planned. Benny is always there because that was always planned. The same with the guy with the suitcase & all the stuff in it etc. And this is also why Cohagen is so angry with Richter because he is destroying all this planning & Cohagen even says that despite the careful planning he is amazed it worked.
There are far more signs in Total Recall that what is happening is just a dream. But there are signs on the opposite as well. As the ones I mentioned. That they are there, clearly saying that this is actually reality, are also just as conveniently perfect into place as all the dream signs. In the bottom line I don't think it matters which you choose to believe, the dream or reality. Neither is right or wrong & I say that even if the dream signs by far outmatch the reality signs it's likely 50-50 which is the winner. Only you decide in how you want to enjoy & conclude how the film ends.
Personally, I always believe in the reality version. Yes, I think all of this is actually happening, no matter how convenient everything falls into place, even if I never rule out the possibility of the dream version. But I find it odd that there would even be a fight at Rekall amongst those that work there, outright telling us watching that nothing has been implanted into Quaid's mind yet. If this is the perfect ego trip, why is there even a fight amongst Rekall staff? Sounds like a faulty ego program to me. Yeah, have me chased by dangerous goons when I pretend to be a secret agent, no problem, but infighting amongst the people that is meant to give me this thing would much destroy the experience I pay for. That scene, when Quaid wakes up as Hauser & Lull telling that nothing has been implanted yet… why is it even in the film at all if not to tell that this is no dream but in fact reality? The scene makes total sense if this is reality but not at all if it is the dream. And the scene is there, a rather lengthy scene with a lot of exposition. It's not at all the best scene but I find it as the most important scene in the whole movie. And it is by so many that push the dream version totally overlooked. Also, personally, the story is better in my mind if all that is happening IS in fact happening! If it's all a dream it's still mighty cool but honestly also more predictable. Even an easier story. And far less meaningful. The dream just gives us a story about a man that asked for a vacation but got lobotomized in the end. But if this is reality then Quaid IS a hero, the man he speaks of early in the film he wants to be. The reality version means freedom for Mars! The reality version means a much larger story that leaves a changing mark on both Mars & Earth. Reality means a meaningful story for billions of people, not just for one individual.
As I said, nothing wrong with choosing the dream version. That may also always have been the intent of the film. But for me personally the signs of reality are far less but far stronger & arguing harder for its cause + that the whole story has far more meaning if this is all happening for real & is not just an imagination.

At blockbuster in Australia there were two versions, an MA15 version and an R18 version, of course we hired the R18, major differences, no bone crushing and shorter death scenes in MA15 version. The movie was like a triple cross or he double crossed himself.

It's really strange that you are going directly against what the director and screenwriters said that there is no answer. Both views are supported equally and it was done like that intentionally. yet here you are saying it is FOR SURE a dream….AND HERE'S WHY! You really didn't do your research for this one huh…
Seeing as most of these films dealing with dreams tend to end in tragic circumstances, BRASIL 1985 for example, I always also thought he was labotomised. I say this because it's a throw away reference at the start of the film, but then not mentioned,and keeping the lead character in this state of dreams was also copied into 2000s film REPOMEN.
Sharon stone was such a smoke show in this… She plays evil bad girl so well

In contrast to the book, the film doesn’t hide it is a dream. They have actually adopted the ending to explain it to those missing the information spoken in the background in the film at about 16m35s, where the technician commenting about the dream to be implanted as a new program called, Blue Sky on Mars.
With this information, if you’ll jump to the last minute of the film and the question is answered.

I first saw this movie as a kid. And omg the scene where the old lady screams "fk you you a hole", it was the most hilarious thing I had ever seen in my life lol….. I used to rewind the tape over and over and die laughing every time she said it lol…
You didn't mention the bead of sweat running down Edgemar's face while Quaid has a gun up to his head. Edgemoor is sitting himself. Love this movie…saw it I theaters when it came out.

One thing I remember about this movie, me a 5 years old kid, having fever, sitting in front of the TV and zapping through the channels. Found this movie that I've never seen before and the first scene that I watch is Arnie pulling that Ball with the transmitter out of his nose. Jesus, I was so shocked that I fled out of the room and ran to my grandma who was in the kitchen. I didn't tell her that I almost craped in my bad but she immediately saw that I was scared to death 🤣
