Like a Dragon: Ishin! DF Tech Review – PS5 vs Xbox Series X/S vs PC vs… PS3?

The Yakuza franchise has evolved – not just in terms of its name but also its key technology. The bespoke Dragon engine powering the series has been replaced by Unreal Engine 4 – but the first title to see the change is actually based on an old Japan-only series entry first seen on PS3. So how does the game play out on all systems? Oliver Mackenzie investigates.

  1. I really liked the PS3 era. I even like some images from the original better. It's an esthetic thing. Like at 14:00 The left picture looks like a blurry image of a place I'd like to explore while the right one looks like the set from a play. Fake and flat.

  2. Wow this new version looks awful. Like the technology improvements are nice but every thing is so muted. It all just looks grey sterile. Where did all the greens and browns go? The PS3 actually looks like it has some nice warm tones but the new game is just 60fps greys with 0 grass.

  4. “The visual options are very basic, consisting of a few toggles, and selections that don’t seem to offer any visual enhancements, over consoles”

He says while showing an image that looks a lot better on PC 😂

  5. you know, at some point, I often wonder if Yakuza series ever has some Dynamite Cop DNA in it. Especially since Quick Time Events were handled better than in Shenmu, or the combat from Spike Out, which also handled combat better than Shenmu.

  7. Just realised on My Series X at least the initial run through Hogsmead is jerky as fuck but if you just stand there and rotate the camera after a few seconds it becomes buttery smooth

So is this the new next gen issue? Initial poor frame rate but hang around a bit and it becomes 60 locked?

I know this has been an issue on PC but why is it all of a sudden becoming an issue on console too?
