Dresden was a beautiful city. I truly wish that more of you could have seen it. It would have been a jewel in a world wherein brutalism is still the root of most architecture.
There is a watch company from Dresden/Glashutte called A. Lange & Sohne who had been in the area since the early 1800s, and had their factory bombed the day before the war ended. The brothers who ran the company were separated by the wall, so the company stood still until the wall came down. Now they are regarded as one of the best watch makers in the world. Thanks for the history of this region as a whole!
As long as there are sociopaths with delusions of grandeur and infallibility, there unfortunately will be atrocities like this.

It’s amazing that half the money for the reconstruction of the Frauenkirche came from donations from all over the world.
The British bombs later in the war were also designed to delay the explosion by several hours. They were specifically designed to blow up when the people were returning from the bomb shelters. I think despite it being clear which side was worse, all out war also brought out the worst in the Allies. Also, these bombs are now the ones that are the most difficult to defuse and there are still thousands that lie in the ground and remain dangerous.

Nice video of US Army Air Force B-17 bombers during daylight. Would have been nice if you had shown some RAF bombers. Otherwise, good video.
Fascinating video, although bit let down by couple of times talking about RAF night bomber raids, but showing clearly American bombers flying in daylight!
Of course the comment section under a video advocating for peace and reconciliation would be full of hateful and resentful couch warmongers. What's new? Nations and people reconciled and Dresden is beautiful once more, get over it.
And I am talking about both the people thinking Dresden deserved the destruction and hate seeing it rebuilt and the people who can't seem to forgive the Allies for destroying Dresden.

A friend of mine's mom has a desk clock that was made is Dresden before it's destruction. It's white porcelain with painted flowers, and it still works.
According to the UK perpetrators of this atrocity, only 25000 civilians were killed. Historians NOT loyal to the Allies will tell you it was 300000.
I remember the ruins of the Frauenkirche in GDR times and in the early 90th's. I was delighted when they finaly cleaned the place and rebuild it. As a kid i could not understand why they let the ruins and all the rubble surounded by construction fence sit there for so long.

When RAF bombers followed by USAAF bombers destroyed Dresden, the Allies had not crossed the Rhine.
The winners of the war was clear to all, but idiotic Germans kept on fighting. Their fault.
I saw no German money poured into rebuilding Liverpool's centre to what it was. The magnificent Customs House was a tragic loss. Liverpool never started the war. The city still has bombed sites which have never been rebuilt upon.

♦ 60 to 65 million people died;
♦ 27 million soviets died;
♦ 17 million Chinese died;
♦ The dead toll in all the wars combined in the past 300 years was less than WW2;
♦ 27,000 people died per day for six years;
♦ The only war in which more civilians were killed than military men. 80% of total – 48 to 53 million;
♦ The only war where 75% of the people killed, were killed by the losers;
♦ Japan killed seven times more people than they lost;
♦ Japan lost three million people;
♦ The USA lost 419,000 people military & civilian;
♦ Britain lost 450,000 military & civilian;
Feel sorry for the Germans who started the war? Not in a million years.
I visited Dresden in September 2022, the Altstadt is beautiful and stands in stark contrast to the Communist monstrosities that stand just across the river from it. It is worth a visit if you are in that part of the Germany.

If Dresden was supposed to have been an important military target, why was it never attacked by the Anglo-Saxons before?
Dresden's historic city center was destroyed in February 1945, at a time when the war had long since been decided and the Red Army was already on German soil.
As late as the 1990s, the Dresden city administration put the number of victims of the bombing at over 200,000.
the following must be taken into account:
(a) The authorities in NS-Germany obviously assumed that Dresden would not be attacked.
b) Dresden, unlike the cities in the west and north of Germany, had no significant air defenses
c) Dresden was a hospital city and housed many wounded.
d) Children from the large cities in the west and north were sent to the Dresden area to protect them from bombing.
e) At the time of the bombings, many thousands (tens of thousands? hundreds of thousands?) of refugees from Silesia were staying in Dresden
f) The destruction of Hamburg by "Operation Gomorrah" was carried out in July 1943. Anglo-Saxon expertise in creating firestorms was significantly "refined" by February 1945.
g) the temperatures reached by the fire were so high that groups of people sometimes melted together into lumps

The in 2004 appointed "Dresden Historians Commission" concluded that only 20,000 refugees from Silesia were in Dresden and that the number of victims was at most 25,000.
Personally, I consider this figure of 25,000 victims to be significantly too low and the figure of 200,000 to be more likely.
Those 800 odd RAF (supposedly Lancaster) bombers look more like American B17 Flying Fortress bombers to me. It must be my aging eyes playing tricks on me.
