Gabriele Micalizzi had rare access to Russian troops fighting in Ukraine, sharing with us images that few other Western photographers have been allowed to take.
Micalizzi’s work has taken him across many conflict zones. Documenting the fall of ISIS in 2019, in Baghuz, Syria, Micalizzi was hit by an RPG rocket. He tells us how his camera saved his eyes.

I remember when they shot that journalist in Nicaragua, Bill Stewart. A tragedy, no weapon just a camera and they shot him. Any soldier who could shoot a non combatant is trash. You combat journalists stay safe and God bless you.

I knew two brothers who went to fight their name's are Joel Nankervis and Jackie "Boy" Nankervis.
He has to defend his craft because so many of his kind have f'd it up so badly and shattered the public's trust completely. This guy seems like a real one. Breath-taking photos.
It's so disgusting to look at. I'm from Mariupol, and for some reason you don't say how you were allowed to film something there, when Russia came to Mariupol, only pro-Russian journalists could film something that was beneficial to Russia. You show footage of the tattoo inspection, for some reason they didn't show how I was kept in filtration for 2 days because of a cat tattoo on my leg, for some reason you don't show what the Russians did to people in the filtration camps. Russia came to my country in 2014, in 2022 Russia destroyed my city, killed tens of thousands of people. So this guy is talking about himself and how important to film history and where he has been and nothing about russian troop killing literally thousands of innocent civilians and bombing for example Mariupol to dust. Seems he's ok with it and too busy taking photos. He's just a narcissistic egotist who doesn't care about people's lives and only cares about his photos. Why didn't he take pictures of the bodies of the killed civilians? Phew, just gross. I hope that one day he will be punished for collaborating with war criminals and will spend more than one year in prison.
